Supplementary Material 3. List of species modeled for the entire Argentinean Chaco ecoregión (ACE) and the Northern Argentine Dry Chaco (NADC). Asterisks denote those species whose models not complying with the criteria of reliability for further use in richness maps (an AUC value >0.65 and/or a final model with more of one variable). The number of occurrence localities refers to the number of effective points used for modelling in the ACE, and between parentheses the number of localities used for modelling in the NADC. For amphibians, birds and mammals the conservation status at national level (López-Lanús et al. 2008; Ojeda et al. 2012; Vaira et al. 2012) is consigned for threatened species, while the international status (from the webpage of the IUCN; accessed at 12/31/2013) are shown between parentheses (CR = critically endangered; EN = endangered; TH = threatened; VU = vulnerable). None of the trees we considered are at the higher risk categories in the list of threatened plant species of Argentina (http://www.lista-planear.org), adopted in 2010 by the Secretaría de Ambiente y Desarrollo Sustentable de la República Argentina. In birds and mammals, the more frequent habitat and diet, according to the available specific literature (del Hoyo et al. 1992-2011; Redford and Eisenberg 1992; Canevari and Vaccaro 2007; Gardner 2008; de la Peña 2011) and our own experience, are indicated. Habitats: F = forests; OA = open areas (grasslands and/or bare soil); W = wetlands and riparian habitats. Diet: c = carnivorous; g = granivorous; h = herbivorous; i = insectivorous; o = omnivorous; s = scavenger.
