2 Project Description Needs: Pli orchard 349 is the only orchard in this SPU, making the seed desirable. The orchard is not meeting the FGC forecast production. Maximizing the seed quantity of seedlots from this orchard will mitigate this shortfall. This supports FGC objectives 3 and 4. Planting and pest management will be used to meet these needs.
Objectives: Increase seed crop quantity to 300,000 plantables in 2017. Increase future seed crop quantity by grafting and planting grafts in 2017.
Procedure: PLANTING. Plant 43 ramets in 2017 from existing grafts into empty locations in the orchard. Projected completion date: September 2017 MONITORING: Monitoring for insects will occur weekly from April to September to determine the need and timing for control measures PEST MANAGEMENT -insects. If pest surveys indicate it is required, Pitch moth will be removed by hand in the spring and fall. Shoots infested with European pine shoot moth larvae will be clipped off and removed from the orchard. Projected completion date: October 2017 PEST MANAGEMENT -non insects. If weather conditions indicate it is required, Surround WP will be applied twice to reduce heat stress and improve seed set. Operational trials at Kalamalka have indicated that this treatment can increase seed yields by approximately 20%. Projected completion date: July 2017.
Location: Pli Orchard 349, Skimikin Seed Orchards, Tappen BC
Output and Deliverables: Plant 43 grafts in 2017. 100% occupancy of the orchard by September 2017. 300,000 potential seedlings produced for the 2017 crop. Reduced ramet mortality and improved health and vigour from preventing Sequoia pitch moth damage. Improved health and vigour, and thus increased seed quantity and quality, by controlling European pine shoot moth populations. 3 Improved health and vigour, and thus increased seed quantity, by reducing heat stress.
Budget: See attached budget form.
Who will benefit from this work? Seed users who require Pli NE high, Class A seed. Forest Genetics Council, by meeting their goals.
