General Steps

Thank you for helping the Hub walk against hunger at Homeward Bound! Here are the basic steps in recruiting walkers for your team. This packet will help you get through Step One: Make a Team.

1. Let Us Know. Let me know you are forming a team so I can help you out! Email me at [email protected]. 2. Register. Register your team at https://www.homewardboundindiana.org/register-today/?wid=967  Select “Register Today”  Select “Start and Lead a Team”  Fill in all the info and be sure you select Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard at the end of the registration form under “Benefitting Agencies” section. 3. Advertise. Email your office, friends, or whoever you want to join! Let them know the who, what, when, where, why. Please feel free to use the email template and advertising materials I included later in the packet. 4. Make Them official.  Select “Register Today”  Select “Join an Existing Team”  In the dropdown box, have them select your team name. You will need to provide this name for them.  They fill in all the info and they will be ready to go! 5. Teach them how to recruit sponsors. I have created a second packet for you to distribute to your walkers. In this packet, they will find email templates and materials to help them recruit sponsors. 6. Have fun! Enjoy a day of team building while you walk against hunger with the Hub!

Recruiting Tips 1. Start Now! The earlier you recruit, the more walkers you get, the more time they have to find sponsors, and the more fun you will have! 2. Use us. I have provided lots of things to help you get their attention. Feel free to use and edit anything in this packet to help you recruit walkers. If you need anything else, email [email protected] or call 812-355- 6843. 3. Facebook. Facebook group pages can be one of the best ways to recruit team members. Invite everyone, post info and pictures, and make this page the hub for your recruitment. You can link to Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard and Homeward Bound’s websites so they can find all the info they need right there! 4. Incentivize. What would make them join your team? Can you give them volunteer hours, a half-day off, or an early Friday leave if they join? Make it an office team-building day or make it a yearly part of your organization’s giving. You know what is best for your team. Try to tap into their motives and you will build a fun, big team! 5. Make it Easy. Show them how simple it is by having a call-out meeting for those who are interested. You can hand out the Sponsor Recruiting Packets and let them glance through it. 6. Make it fun! Get excited and they will too. You all are doing a very powerful thing. You are walking in honor of the voices of Bloomington to fight homelessness and hunger. Be proud and have a blast! 4

Email Template Use the following email to help you reach out. Feel free to edit it as much as you want and make it your own.

Hello NAMES , Come take a walk with me!

ORGANIZATION is walking at the 2014 Homeward Bound walk in order to raise money for our local food pantry, Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard. We want a big team to come out and join us Sunday, April 13th at 1:00pm. By walking at Homeward Bound, we will be raising awareness and money for the homeless in Bloomington. ORGANIZATION is walking in honor of Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard, a community food resource center. The Hub, as we like to call it, increases access to healthy food for all people in need in ways that cultivate dignity, self-sufficiency, and community. They run a no barrier food pantry that operates on the honor system, allowing anyone who needs food to access groceries. They also run a nutrition education program that teaches folks how to prepare and preserve healthy food from easily accessible groceries. The garden program harvests fresh produce from four community gardens and provides free garden classes for anyone interested in growing food for themselves. The Hub is really a community, as 90% of their volunteers are patrons seeking to contribute. If you want to learn more, please visit http://mhcfoodpantry.org/ to read about their values and programs. So, come walk with us! All you have to do is sign-up for the team and recruit a few sponsors to donate in honor of your walk. Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard has created a helpful “Recruit Sponsors” packet that will help you spread the word and gain support. Interested but want to know more? Check out the websites and come to the call-out meeting at: INCLUDE INFO ABOUT CALL-OUT MEETING To thank you for supporting our cause, we will.... INCLUDE COMPANY INCENTIVES.
