Nearby Colchester is an historical town dating back to the Romans. Here you will find an abundance of shops, restaurants and bars. There is a large leisure centre with indoor pools, tennis courts, ten pin bowling and roller-skating. Clacton-on-Sea is a nice town by the sea, large sandy beaches, amusement arcades and a pier. Type of work: -The company grows 60 hectares of strawberry plants, 30 hectares of raspberry canes, 25 hectares of strawberries for fruit and 10 hectares of blackberries for fruit. DE & DM Drinkwater and Sons is a family run business, which grows vegetables and potatoes. Cereals are grown as part of a rotation. As well as the main crops, there are also some small plots of other vegetables mainly grown for the local farmers market. The farm has a fruit and vegetable shop 2.5 miles away from the farm in Chipping Campden and also supplies wholesale markets, local farm shops, pubs, hotels, and local shops. Chipping Campden is a historical market town which has a picturesque high street with an old market hall. There is a pub, some hotels and shops including a chemist, a Post Office, a tourist information centre, two small convenience stores, a bakery and a butcher. The farm runs a retail business from the farm premises where you can buy fresh fruit and veg at discounted prices. Stratford upon Avon is nearby (which has Shakespeare's theatre and other attractions including the River Avon which has boat trips available. There are lots of shops and a supermarket, and a cinema and sports centre in Stratford. The farm will provide a weekly shopping trip and you can also access the local shops on foot or by car. Working Conditions

Type of work: Type of work will include planting, harvesting and weeding. Planting will include both by hand (beans, courgettes, asparagus) and by semi automatic machine. This lasts from March until September. Apart from a few weeks in May/June there is usually something being harvested all year round, but the students will mainly be concerned with harvesting from June onwards starting with broad beans, peas (picked by hand),. Students may be required to work on the mobile vegetable harvester packing the veg, either cutting calabrese, cauliflower and cabbage, or working on the trailer packing the vegetables. Other crops to harvest later will be courgettes, potatoes and sweetcorn.

DE & DM Drinkwater and Sons is a family run business, which grows vegetables and potatoes. Cereals are grown as part of a rotation. As well as the main crops, there are also some small plots of other vegetables mainly grown for the local farmers market. The farm has a fruit and vegetable shop 2.5 miles away from the farm in Chipping Campden and also supplies wholesale markets, local farm shops, pubs, hotels, and local shops. Chipping Campden is a historical market town which has a picturesque high street with an old market hall. There is a pub, some hotels and shops including a chemist, a Post Office, a tourist information centre, two small convenience stores, a bakery and a butcher. The farm runs a retail business from the farm premises where you can buy fresh fruit and veg at discounted prices. Stratford upon Avon is nearby (which has Shakespeare's theatre and other attractions including the River Avon which has boat trips available. There are lots of shops and a supermarket, and a cinema and sports centre in Stratford. The farm will provide a weekly shopping trip and you can also access the local shops on foot or by car. Accommodation is in a mobile home. There are bedrooms with beds, mattresses, pillows and furniture to store your belongings in. There are showers and washbasins. Toilets are in a separate block from the mobile homes. The kitchen facilities include a cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer, kettle, cooking pots, cutlery, crockery and tables and chairs. The nursery is situated near to the village of Welton at the southern end of the Yorkshire Wolds, which makes the surrounding area very scenic. There are regular buses and trains from here which will take you to Hull, approximately 10 miles away, where there are major shopping and leisure facilities (cinemas, ice rink and museums etc.) A bit further afield is the Yorkshire coast, with beaches, and to the north is the historic City of York with its abundance of history, museums and shops. Ketchers Farm (Blackmooor Estate) is owned by the Selborne family. It is 1000 hectares in total and grows various fruits such as apples, pears, plums and strawberries. Cairntradlin is located just outside Aberdeen in north-east Scotland. It is 2 miles from the village of Blackburn, approximately 7 miles from Aberdeen. Blackburn has a small supermarket, a fish and chip shop, post office, public house and a community hall which has a gym. There is a regular bus service to both Aberdeen and Inverurie. There are many popular tourist attractions, many castles and historical sites as well as very beautiful countryside. Accommodation Accommodation is in dormitory style mobile homes and caravans. Rooms include beds, mattresses, pillows and blankets. You should have a warm sleeping bag, as it can get very cold at night. All sleeping areas are heated. All buildings are very strictly non-smoking and smoke alarms must not be tampered with on any account. Anyone found to be smoking in the buildings will be fined £10. Working Conditions

Type of work: The farm has 10 hectares of hops, picked by machine. The hops are cut down manually and loaded onto trailers which are then driven to the static Machine for picking. One or two students are sometimes needed to drive tractors for this. The hops bines have to be hung up and once picked some leaves are removed on an inspection table and the hops are bagged up. This whole operation requires 18 people. The hops are then dried in the Oast House and a further 5 people are involved in loading, unloading the kilns and pressing the hops into hessian wrapped bales. This all happens in the first two weeks of September, and is done on day work with plenty of overtime! This is followed by pear picking, and then apple picking which finishes mid-October. The farm grows 5 hectares of pears and 7 hectares of apples. These are picked mostly into bulk bins on ‘piecework’. The Concordia student labour team is supplemented for both hop picking and fruit picking by several people who live locally, and being a fairly small farm they have a friendly crew! After apple picking, the farm usually has extra work for those who want to stay on to help prune some of the 32 hectares of blackcurrants.

Amery Court Farm is located in the south east of England, and grows strawberries, cherries, raspberries and asparagus. It is situated in the beautiful and historic county of Kent. The city of Canterbury is very near and there you will find shops, pubs, leisure facilities and amenities. Some interesting places to see in Kent are Canterbury Cathedral, Leeds Castle and the White Cliffs of Dover. 1. WELCOME ADDRESS My name is Charles Atkins. I am the Managing Director of C. E. Murch Ltd. Amery Court Farm. I have overall control of the day to day running of the farm. Mrs. Katie Atkins is my wife and she deals with any personal questions you have. GRIEVANCE AND DISCIPLINARY PROCEDURES Discipline must be maintained within our large workforce at all times and we reserve the right to dismiss any employee who is guilty of serious misconduct or who fails to adhere to our rules and procedures. 7.1 We reserve the right to instantly dismiss any employee guilty of gross misconduct, misconduct, criminal or threatening behaviour. 7.2 Our aim is to encourage improvement to individual conduct and you must comply with our grievance and disciplinary procedures which form part of your contract of employment. In an emergency and in the absence of the Manager, medical assistance can be obtained by telephoning 999.. HEALTH AND SAFETY The farm will take every precaution to provide a safe environment in which to work. You yourself, whilst working on the farm, have an equal obligation to take all reasonable steps to safeguard both yourself and all others on the farm. 9.1 You will be required to read the Farm Health and Safety Declaration, which is always posted outside the farm office, and you must always adhere to its content. 9.2 You will see that certain tasks are specifically banned without the express permission of the Manager and also without specialist training. 9.3 Farms can be dangerous places and these conditions will be specifically discussed with you, if you work here. You will live in mobile homes, which you will share with others. There are 3 to 4 people per home. There is some accommodation for couples. The campsite is a friendly place where the farm aims to keep students happy and will try to accommodate all reasonable requests. Kitchen facilities include a cooker, fridge, freezer, kettle, cooking pots, cutlery, crockery, a table and chairs. Everyone will be expected to prepare and cook their own meals including making sandwiches etc. and drinks to be used when working away from the farmyard. There is a TV and some outdoor recreation, including barbecue and bicycle provision. There is a football goal and a tennis court you can use. You will be expected to clean your accommodation and some equipment, such as a vacuum cleaner, is provided. No extension leads should be used. Your accommodation will be checked weekly for cleanliness. Showers, washing facilities and washing machines will be made available. The washing machines should not be overloaded and if you detect any mechanical problem, the machine should be turned off and the matter reported to Mr or Mrs Atkins immediately. RUBBISH - You will be shown where the dustbin is and you should purchase black polythene bags to be used within it. Collection is early Tuesday mornings. PERSONAL POSSESSIONS - The farm can accept no responsibility for your personal possessions. In certain circumstances they may be prepared to place such items in a safe place, but items are left STRICTLY AT YOUR OWN RISK. No personal MP3 players, walkmans or iPods are allowed in the field for your own personal safety. TELEPHONE CALLS - There is a public phone box at the village shop. Working Conditions

Type of work: TYPE OF WORK: May to end of July: Students will be picking Strawberries (Shoulder height), raspberries, asparagus and cherries. There is also some planting and husbandry work involved on these crops and occasional packing for farm shop and market sales. No supermarket packing is involved. All strawberries and raspberries are grown under plastic or glass. There is a lot of weekend work late May to early July. August: This work period is mainly harvesting strawberries with some husbandry work. September to November: Picking pears into trays, strawberries and raspberries for supermarket and organic apples/pears into bins. September to early October is very busy and work will slow down thereafter. All strawberry/ raspberry picking is done using a waist high trolley, so picking is quick and easier than soil grown crops. Picking work is generally by piece work rates where the conscientious and fast worker is rewarded. Slow pickers are given help to speed up but if they cannot make a good rate they are found other work or transferred. Amery Court Farm is a small specialist unit with no more than 25 pickers at a time. The supervisors are friendly and very experienced. They know all the tricks that pickers can play but are helpful to those who put in some effort! WORK The farm will make sure the piece work rate always covers your minimum pay entitlement. IF YOU CONSISTANTLY EARN UNDER THE MINIMUM PAY YOU WILL NOT BE GIVEN WORK WORK This is a Mixed Fruit Farm and our crops are normally picked between April and December. If you come you will be working here as a casual worker for harvest and, for reasons of crop, weather and customer demand, work cannot be promised at any time and there are no normal working hours.

Days when work may be available: The farm tries not to work on Sundays, but sometimes the glasshouses need picking everyday.

Hours worked: Start times will vary according to weather and what has to be done during the day. The farm tries to finish work by 1700 or earlier. The farm usually works six days a week, crop, weather and customer demand permitting. The farm would normally work no more than an 8 hour day. However, the nature of this employment is such that your hours of work will vary and there are no normal working hours. It is a condition of your employment that you work flexibly in accordance with the working arrangements we operate. It is a term of this contract that there may be periods when no work is available for you to do. We have no obligation to provide you with any work under this contract or to provide any minimum number of hours work in any day or week. You shall be available to work when requested unless otherwise agreed in advance with us. The Working Day is dictated by the Supervisor or Row Checker and no harvesting will take place unless he or she is present. In very hot weather, the hours actually worked can be altered by mutual agreement, but Row Checkers on the whole like to start around 0730 and not finish after 1700 hours. If we are working in the greenhouses we may start earlier with a break in the hottest part of the day.

Rates Of Pay: HOLIDAYS & WAGES Regular and overtime pay rates and Holiday and Bank Holiday entitlement (which will be taken daily) are in accordance with the terms of the Agricultural Wages Order. HOURS OF WORK The majority of work on our farm will be on a piece work basis, when weather plus state of the crop will play a part. 4.1 We shall give you a pay slip on each day that you work which will show the hours worked; the hourly rate of pay applicable for the day in question; the resultant legal wage to which you are entitled; and the total holiday money due. It will also show any additional monies you have earned as a result of any piece work rate set that day. 4.2 We do not pay wages during breaks such as meals. Much work will be done on Piece Work based on your own individual production. Wages are calculated daily as above and will be paid when you leave the farm, every Friday or on request. Rumwood Green Farm is located in the south east of England, and its produce includes strawberries, apples and pears. The farm is situated at Langley on the A274 about 3 miles east of Maidstone. There is a frequent daily bus service to the town centre. Maidstone is the administrative centre of the county of Kent, a major shopping town and has the River Medway running through it. Other attractions include a museum a large leisure centre (for sports and swimming etc.), shops, restaurants, night clubs, bowling, cinema and a small theatre. Nearby are the famous Leeds castle and many good pubs. The coast is accessible for the day as is Canterbury with its famous cathedral. London is only an hour away by train. A weekly food shopping trip will be arranged by the farmer and an occasional outing may also be provided. Accommodation

Accommodation is in 4/6 berth mobile homes. There are single and double beds, mattresses, pillows, wardrobes and chest of drawers. Most mobile homes have showers; toilet and basin, those without have kitchen, shower and toilet facilities within the adjoining recreational building. Kitchen facilities include a cooker, a fridge, freezer, cooking pots, cutlery, crockery and tables and chairs. There is also a recreation room with a television & video, a table tennis, darts and the farmer provides football facilities, a few bicycles and barbecues. Chicory Crops is a fruit farm, growing raspberries, apples and cherries, situated in the west of England. The farm is only 3 miles from Ross-On-Wye. Hereford and Gloucester are both 15 miles away. The nearest public house is only 200 metres away. Shopping trips are arranged by the farmer twice weekly. Some outings may be arranged by the farmer, like going to see castles and swimming. Football and chess games can be played against other farms. There may be some vehicles available for students use and students must pay for the fuel when they use the vehicles. The farmer has a personal aeroplane and if you clean it and do a good job he will take you for a flight! Accommodation

Accommodation is in 2 bunk cabins and mobile home. There is also a dormitory which sleeps 8 people with an adjoining television room. All beds are single with 2 people per room. Elwell Fruit Farm is located in the south west of England, and grows apples and pears. The farm is situated about 5 miles from the Dorset coast and three miles from the town of Bridport. Bridport is a market town with good shopping facilities and a modern leisure centre and swimming pool. There is a pub about a ¼ mile from the farm. A weekly shopping trip for groceries will be arranged by the employer. Accommodation

Accommodation is in two mobile homes. Each unit has two bedrooms (one with a double bed and one with two small single beds), living/ eating area, kitchen area and shower/toilet room. There is some accommodation for couples. Mattresses, pillows and blankets are provided in the bedrooms with wardrobe space. The kitchen areas each have a gas cooker, fridge, microwave, electric kettle and sufficient cooking utensils, crockery and cutlery for 4 persons. The living/eating areas have gas fires and small TVs. There is also a separate toilet and shower for students’ use and a laundry room with washing machine, iron and ironing board. Cycles and helmets are provided, as well as a selection of board games. All students must provide and cook their own meals and keep the units clean and tidy. There is a laptop available for students use, with wireless internet access. Additional Charges

General Information

Lested Farm is a medium sized farm located in the south east of England, in a village called Chart Sutton, and its produce includes top fruit and pumpkins. It is a family run business. Chart Sutton has a local shop, and a pub and a post office. It is about a mile to the nearest doctors surgery and sports centre, and about 2 miles to the bank and supermarket, based in the town of Maidstone. Maidstone has plenty of amenities and shops, leisure facilities and a train station and hospital. The farm will provide a weekly shopping trip and you can also get to the shops on foot or by bus. Accommodation

Accommodation is in a caravan. There are bedrooms with beds, mattresses, pillows and furniture to store your belongings in. Please make sure you bring a sleeping bag and pillow. There are toilets, showers and washbasins located in a separate block. The kitchen facilities include a microwave, cooker, fridge, kettle, cooking pots, cutlery, crockery and tables and chairs. All students must provide and cook their own food and keep the living areas clean and tidy. There is a washing machine and drying area. There is a TV, a BBQ, a stereo and an outside grassed area for students to use. Additional Charges

Rent: £25 per student per week Electricity and transport: £5 per student per week Total: £30 per student per week There is a damage deposit of £100 which will be refunded to you at the end of your work period provided that the accommodation is left clean and tidy and no damage or theft has occurred. Owens Court Selling Faversham Kent

General Information

Owens Court is located in the south east of England, and it grows fruit. The farm is between Selling village and Faversham town, 9 miles from Canterbury, 50 miles from London. There are many interesting historical sites to see in Kent including the Canterbury cathedral, Leeds castle and the white cliffs of Dover. Nearby are the sea, golf, horse riding, cinema and swimming pool. A shopping trip will be arranged by the farmer twice a week and there is a small shop for essentials at the farmhouse. Accommodation

Accommodation is in caravans and accommodation building sleeping 2 people in each room with single beds all with mattresses, pillows, wardrobes and chest of drawers. Some of the accommodation is suitable for couples. There are 3 toilets, 3 showers and 2 hand basins, separated for males and females. The kitchen facilities include cookers, fridges, a kettle, cooking pots, cutlery, crockery and tables and chairs. There is a washing machine and rest room with television. There are some bicycles students can use. Occasional outings will be arranged. All students must provide and cook their own food and keep the living area clean and tidy. Additional Charges

Type of work: The work available at the farm includes the following: -Fruit picking - apples, pears and plums (14.5 hectares apples, 4 hectares of pears and 1 hectare of plums). -All manual harvesting

Watts Farms grow vegetables and are locates in the south east of England. The farm is near to the town of Orpington where you will find some shops, a bowling alley and a swimming pool. Bromley and Sidcup are also nearby and have shops, cinemas and a gym. London is only a 20 minute train ride from Orpington. London is a big city with all kinds of shopping, historical sites and entertainment. A weekly shopping trip will be arranged by the Farm. Accommodation

Accommodation will be in mobile homes with beds, mattresses, pillows and wardrobes to keep your belongings in. 3 showers, 5 toilets and 6 hand basins are available. Kitchen facilities include a cooker, fridge, microwave, toaster, freezer, kettle, cooking pots, cutlery, crockery, table & chair. All washing is currently done for the students. There is a television, video, stereos and a playstation for recreational use. All students must provide and cook their own food and keep the living areas clean and tidy. There are some bicycles and a barbecue. Additional Charges

-RENT: £26.25 per week -WASHING: £9 per week: (Washing clothes, changing and washing bedding) -Gas/ Water/ Electricity £6.75 -TOTAL: £42 per student per week There is a damage deposit of £50, which will be returned to you provided your accommodation is left clean and tidy at the end of your stay, and no damage or theft has occurred.

Type of work: -Parsley and spinach harvesting. -This will include various jobs such as carting vegetables from the fields to the packhouse, irrigation, moving of pipes tractor driving and lifting. -There might be some work in the packhouse
