Student  Fourth Graders Background  In this grade the gap in learned skills becomes more apparent. Students who are attending private schools begin to pull ahead of their classmates who do not attend private schools or attend much less frequently. Also some students begin considering to themselves that learning English is too hard and start thinking about giving up. For that reason this is a very important grade. Hopefully with the new phonics program in place (over several semesters) students who are beginning phonics study in First Grade now will have gained the confidence they need to keep going. Language  As this is the first semester of phonics training Skill these students will need a lot of remedial work. Objectives  This remedial work will include going through the Yellow, Orange, Red, Green and Blue Flashcards and audio CD’s and workbooks. In order to build confidence and hopefully bring the students closer to the same reading level.  Mastering one-syllable words.  Mastering First through Third grade materials.  Connecting reading out loud success to speaking successfully as well. Major  Cover all the flashcards and CD’s from 1st, 2nd and 3rd Learning grade. Objectives  Cover all the “HOP” Readers, 1-30.  Link Reading and discussion to improve speaking abilities. Learning  Follow the same learning strategies used in grades Strategies one through three. Lesson  Mastering Short Vowel sounds. Contents  Reading the “HOP” books.  Mastering new beginning and ending word sounds. Assessment  Student performance assessment will be ongoing and noted at six-week intervals for each student. That’s 2 written assessments (non-tested) and 1 final assessment conducted by a Final Oral Exam. Student  Fifth Graders Background  5A and 5B are the most diverse and difficult groups to teach in this school. Problem areas include lack of confidence and lack of motivation. They are also undisciplined and unruly. In addition to these drawbacks there are personality conflicts within the groups and wide differences in abilities and maturity.  In 5A there are 3 students who cannot read, 1 who needs a lot of help, 5 OK, 2 good and 2 very good. Thus I propose a multilevel class.(4 lower level, 5 intermediate level, 4 upper level) In 5B there are 4 students who need a lot of help reading, 2 who are OK, 5 who are good, and 2 very good. I plan to move the 2 OK readers into the intermediate level and the 2 best readers from intermediate into the upper level. So the class can be split the same as 5A. The big difference in this class is the divide in speaking ability. Half of the class scored 90 to 100 on their oral exam and the other half scored 60 and below. Language Skill  During the course of the semester to bring up Objectives the lower level students to an intermediate level.  To bring up the Intermediate level students to upper level.  To bring up the upper level students to a more advanced level.  Reading aloud and discussing what they have read. Learning  Follow the strategies used in grades 1 – 4, for Strategies lower level.  For intermediate and upper levels use computer CD Rom to enhance vocabulary. If a computer cannot be used in class then I will print out the vocabulary lessons from the CD Rom and use them as activity sheets.  Set up three stations in the classroom, one for each level. Get each level started and go from group to group checking on their work. Once a routine has been established this should go smoothly. Major Learning  Build confidence and motivation in reading and Objectives speaking abilities. Lesson Contents  Lower level students will be doing a lot of remedial work from materials used in the first through third grades, plus moving on to higher readers when they are ready.  Intermediate level students will quickly review all fourth grade material and quickly move on to the Blue readers for fifth grade.  Upper level students will begin with Blue readers for fifth grade and finish them before the end of the semester. Assessment  Student performance assessment will be ongoing and noted at six-week intervals for each student. That’s 2 written assessments (non-tested) and 1 final assessment conducted by a Final Oral Exam. 5A and B - Lesson Content Page Multi-level Phonics Class 5A and B - Lower/Intermediate/ Upper – Multi-level Phonics Class

Student  Sixth Graders Background  The sixth graders in general are more homogeneous in their reading and speaking abilities and with the exception of a few students function well in groups. 6A can be split into 2 groups consisting of a lower level and an intermediate level. 6B can be split into two groups consisting of an intermediate level and an upper level. Language  Overall improvement in reading aloud and speaking Skill abilities. Objectives  Learning language discovery skills, that is, how to deduct meaning from the text without memorizing vocabulary.  Feeling more comfortable in an open conversation. Learning  Give explicit, systematic reading instructions. Skills  How and where to break multi-syllabic words into separate syllables, and how to pronounce those syllables.  Practice applying these skills by reading short stories and books out loud.  Building the bridge between reading and saying simple words to longer words. Major  Reading out loud and discussion of short stories and Learning books. Objectives  Get the students to open up more, speak up and take a chance.  Build their confidence in Speaking.
