Google Maps Lesson Plan Ideas

ESL Advanced, HI, LI and Beg. Levels and ABE all levels.

Suggestions and ideas for practicing Google Maps at various levels:

 ABE – students research the places that are relevant to a reading assignment and describe them (their history, demographic, famous food, music clips) using Google Maps, Internet research and PowerPoint presentation.

 ESL Intermediate and Advanced levels - students describe their “Dream Vacation” and give directions, and practice gerunds, present perfect and other verb tenses:

o I’d like to go fishing. o I haven’t gone fishing in a long time. o We are planning to go fishing this June.

 ESL Low and High Beginning levels - students give directions to the local city locations (library, movie theatre, city hall, hospital, restaurant, and etc. They practice prepositions and give orders o Turn left/right, walk down…It’s just across the street… It’s opposite the gas station  and expressions such as o “I’d like to…” “I’m going to”

Example Lesson Plan “San Diego Dream Vacation”

Purpose This lesson is designed to give students information about using technology and Google Maps and also to provide them with assistance in vocabulary and language skills by having them design their dream vacation.  Beginning students search for local destinations  Intermediate students search for statewide destinations (hotel stay can also be researched and included)  Advanced and ABE students search for national or international destinations (flight and hotel can be researched and included)

Target Audience--All levels

1 Objectives --Reading Objective (all levels) Do research on Google Maps to design a dream vacation. Locate the place you want to go on the map; find the distance and the travel time by car or by bus, using the following worksheet. Guide for using Google Maps 1. Get on the Internet

Present their plans to a partner, small group or to the class.

Teaching Procedures Ask students to name the places they would like to go on their dream vacation. Let them choose either one or several of them. Teach them how to use Google Maps to see those places before going. Then students will give directions from Whittier to their selected place(s) and answer teacher’s questions either by making a class presentation (using PowerPoint is a plus) or in writing.

5 Assessment Assessment includes informal observation during the lesson, evaluation of the worksheet, work completion, and PowerPoint with oral class presentation or writing assignment.

 Lesson Warm-up: Teacher/Student large group conversation

Q: Where would you like to go? What places would you like to see? What would you like to do? What motel are you going to stay at?

A: I’d like to go to San Diego. I’d like to see San Diego Sea World, Zoo, Safari Park and Wild Animal Park. Besides I‘d like to go on whale watching expedition cruise. I also want to take stand-up paddle boarding lessons. I haven’t ever done this before.

 Research

 Student goes on Internet and selects a motel where he/she is planning to stay, and using Google Maps, has a look at the motel and gives directions there.

 Student writes, explaining why she/he wants to go to San Diego, how he/she chose the motel, and how to reach his/her destination.

For example:

We have decided to go to San Diego. My husband likes fishing. He hasn’t gone fishing in a long time. I want to take stand-up paddle boarding lessons. I have never taken those lessons before. Our kinds want to go to SeaWorld. They have never been there before. They have seen it only on TV. And we all would like to go on a whale watching expedition cruise.

We’ve selected Day’s Inn near SeaWorld: 3350 Rosecrans St., San Diego, CA 92110. Tel: 866-925-7881 The price is good. It’s only $74 per night. We’ve checked the directions to the motel and have seen how the motel looks. We’ve seen the pictures of the motel from inside and out. There is A/c, good

6 parking, internet, and pool. We’ve also checked the overall review rating out of 1,333 reviews.

We should take 5 S from Carmenita in Santa Fe Springs, follow 5 S Fwy to Camino Del Rio W in Point Loma, and take the exit towards S Rosecrans St .

Directions to the motel after we exit the 5 freeway:

Then in the same way students give directions from the motel to the places they want to visit in San Diego.

Beginning students can pick up some local places in Whittier such as local library, hospital, post office, museum, mall, police station, DMV, bank, park and do the same thing. Advanced and ABE students can select nationwide and international places to go.
