Topic: From Needles to Knife: What You Need to Know About Thyroid Cancer Cortney Lee, M.D University of Kentucky, Assistant Professor of Surgery Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity the participants will be able to: 1) Review the evaluation and management of thyroid nodules. 2) Discuss the significance of the rising incidence of thyroid cancer. 3) Summarize types of thyroid cancer including differences in treatment and prognosis. 4) Describe the surgical management of thyroid cancer. 5) Compare the shift in use of radioactive iodine in lieu of recent ATA guidelines. Topic: Esophageal Cancer Timothy Mullett, M.D. Medical Director, UK Markey Cancer Center Objectives: At the conclusion of this activity the participants will be able to: 1) Recognize the presentation of esophageal cancer. 2) Describe the work up of esophageal cancer. 3) Identify the treatment options for esophageal cancer.
Target Audience: Hematology/Oncology, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Residents, students, and other interested health care staff Application for CME credit has been filed with the American Academy of Family Physicians. 12:30-1:00 p.m.-Sarah Smith, MSN, RN, OCN, ONC, Oncology Nurse Navigator will give a 30 minute presentation on the Oncology/Infusion Unit and the purpose of a nurse navigator and how it has grown. 1:15-2:15 p.m. - Cortney Lee, M.D. will present the topic Thyroid Cancer. Dr. Lee is an Associate Professor of Surgery with the University Of Kentucky College Of Medicine 2:15-2:45 p.m.-Brittany Dunn, APRN will give a presentation about palliative care in our service area, and how patients have responded. 3:00-4:00 p.m. - Timothy Mullett, M.D. will present Esophageal Cancer. Dr. Mullett is the Chief, General Thoracic Surgery Section and the Associate Professor, Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University of Kentucky Medical Center. Dr. Mullett is also the Surgical Director, Multidisciplinary Lung Cancer Clinic at Markey Cancer Center in Lexington, Kentucky
