Student requirements and classroom procedures
1. Attend all classes unless officially excused. Accumulated tardiness, unexcused absences and/or cuts will result in loss of credit. Classroom participation is most important.
2. Homework: In order to fully understand the concepts presented in class, you must complete homework assignments and study. Homework will be done nightly and consists of studying, reading, answering questions, and writing assignments. Check Homework Hero which is updated daily at 4:00pm. Go to the Lakeland web-site at www.lakeland.k12.nj.us and follow the prompts. “I didn’t know” is not an excuse for not completing homework. Homework is due at the beginning of class in the assigned format. I will not accept late homework. When absent but not sick, students are REQUIRED to check My Faculty Page and complete assigned homework. Students are REQUIRED to bring home the following materials nightly: o the current novel we are reading (when applicable) o current study guide (when applicable) o Vocabulary Packet o Writing Packet o Reading Packet
3. Make-up Procedures: If you have an excused absence, you may make up the work. a. For homework, announced quizzes, and tests: Per school policy, students with excused absences are given an equivalent number of days to make up work without penalty. Check Faculty Page for assignments. Late homework will not be accepted. b. For pop quizzes: I will administer a pop quiz on new content within a reasonable period of time. c. Students will receive a zero for any work not made up within the allotted time. d. Make up quizzes and tests will be taken after school or during student study hall at my discretion.
4. Required Class Materials: To achieve our goals efficiently, it is necessary to have certain materials with you at all times. These include: a. 1 1/2 inch three ring binder, b. 5-tab dividers (optional) c. notebook paper, d. the book we are using, pen and pencil, e. assigned homework, f. TIMETRACKER. i. If a student does not bring all these materials to class, a zero (0) will be assigned for the day. 5. Have textbook covered at all times.
Grading Policy
1. GRADING Each of the FOUR marking periods is worth 22.5% of the final grade. The final exam is worth 10% of the final grade in the course.
2. ESSAYS, TESTS & QUIZZES Your final grade in this class will be calculated in the following manner: Tests: 50-100 points Quizzes: 5 – 50 points Essays: 100 points Projects/Presentations: 25 – 100 points Homework: 5 points per week (at teacher's discretion)
Note: Due to variations in the scope and time requirements among assignments, adjustments in point values may be made at the discretion of the teacher. Students will be notified of such changes.
3. LATE POLICY Essays/Major Assignments: Late assignments will lose 20% if they are submitted one class meeting day late, 50% for a second class meeting day late, and will not be accepted for credit later. Homework: Late homework will not be accepted. Per school policy, students with excused absences are given an equivalent number of days to make up their work without penalty. If a student misses an assessment, then I will place a zero in the grade book as a placeholder . I will remove the zero once a student has made up missing work.
4. TURNITIN.COM All typed assignments must be submitted to turnitin.com. Plagiarism or cheating of any sort on any type of assignment will result in a zero and possible administrative involvement.
5. COLLABORATION/PLAGIARISM/CHEATING I understand that if I give my work to a peer who then hands it in as his/her own, I will receive a zero for the assignment. I understand that it is important to collaborate with and help peers, but it is not acceptable to give my work to a peer because I run the risk of the peer stealing my work.
Cheating and Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in very serious consequences (zeros, parental notification, disciplinary referral). This applies to all assignments; tests, homework, essays, research papers, etc… 6. EXTRA HELP I am available for extra help and make-ups after school on Fridays in room 206 and A-days block 3B in room 206. Other teachers are available for Extra help during most lunches and study halls. Details are posted in the classroom.
7. CONTACTING MRS. PAGANO I prefer email over voicemail. My email is: [email protected]
8. POWER SCHOOL Students and parents will be able to view grades on POWER School. It is located on the first page of our website at www.lakeland.k12.nj.us.
9. OTHER Today’s lifestyle is busy for everyone. In order to simplify matters, I keep my online grade book (Power School) and Faculty Page current. They will help answer many questions regarding grades, due dates, and missing class work or homework. I ask that parents/guardians and students check both of these sites before contacting me. Please contact me if you have any question, problem, or concern. My e-mail address is [email protected].
continued.... 10. ESSAY PROCEDURES How to hand in an essay:
a. A paper copy must be handed in on the due date, even if Mrs. Pagano is absent. In that case, hand in the essay to the substitute. b. All essays must be typed. c. If a student’s printer is broken, the student must email the essay to me at [email protected]. The email is due before the start of class. d. If a student’s printer is broken and the internet is down, then the student must bring a note signed by a parent/guardian. The note is due at the beginning of class. During class, the student may borrow my flash drive to access his/her paper. The next day, using a school computer, the student may print the paper and submit the paper through Turnitin.com. e. If a student’s computer “crashes,” which makes it impossible to access the essay, the student must bring a note signed by a parent/guardian. The student will receive a 24 hour extension. No further extension will be given. I recommend students routinely backup work on a flash drive. f. 10 points are deducted for each “late” day. After 5 days (including the due date), the student will receive a zero.
How to submit an essay through Turnitin.com
a. An electronic copy must also be submitted through Turnitin.com within 48 hours of the due date. If an essay is not submitted through Turnitin.com within 48 hours of the due date/time, then a zero will be placed in the grade book as a placeholder until the student fulfills the Turnitin.com requirement. b. If students discover that they are unable to submit documents through TII from home or someplace other than Lakeland, students can solve this problem as follows: Email the document to oneself, open at school, save onto the school’s G:// drive, and then submit to TII through Lakeland’s internet
Hand in the essay, then report to my classroom during study hall, ask me to return the document, scan the document into your G://drive using the scanner in my classroom (I can show you how to do this), save onto the school’s G:// drive, and then submit to TII through Lakeland’s internet
