Frontier College is a national, non-profit literacy organization which was founded in 1899. We work with children, teens, adults and families who need help to improve their literacy skills. We work with a variety of community-based organizations to deliver volunteer-run, community-based programs across Canada.
In Toronto, Frontier College has delivered structured Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) programming for over 10 years. The program includes small group classes that are instructor- led and accompanied by volunteer support, as needed. The Program Assistant will support LBS program instructors at 2 sites located in Scarborough.
We are currently seeking a highly motivated individual to join the team and gain valuable skills by working in this exciting program. Frontier College is able to provide this position through the Investing in Neighbourhoods initiative of Toronto Employment and Social Services and the successful candidate must live in Toronto and be a recipient of Ontario Works assistance.
Overall Accountability The Program Assistant is a member of the Frontier College staff team and reports to the Instructor Coordinator. Frontier College staff will provide training and mentorship to the successful candidate.
Major Duties and Responsibilities Help to support volunteers, placement students, adults and youth involved in Frontier College programs at assigned locations Support program operations by collecting, organizing and distributing program materials and resources for the applicable sites Assist in responding to Information and Resource (I&R) inquiries; ensure I & R information is current and reflective of learner and visitor needs Conduct customer service calls to a variety of stakeholders; document the outcome where necessary Book learner intakes and assessments; complete the assessment and intake administrative duties (eg. room bookings, preparing packages etc.) Collect and track program statistics; create program reports, enter data into appropriate systems Participate in community presentations to build and maintain referral networks, partnerships and enhanced programming; focus on youth and adult groups Work at both Scarborough sites as scheduled Skills and Attributes Knowledge of literacy, community development and adult education principles Ability to manage time effectively and adhere to deadlines Work with diverse populations and age groups and with the ability to demonstrate sensitivity and awareness Knowledge of community and social service resources in the Scarborough area Energetic, resourceful, tolerant of ambiguity and possess a positive learning attitude Able to think critically, solve problems and manage details Work well independently and as part of a team Excellent spoken and written communication Computer skills (MS Word, Outlook, Excel and Internet) Organized, able to manage multiple tasks and deal with stress
Additional Assets Experience working with urban Aboriginal groups Experience working with youth aged 19-29 Experience working with marginalized adults aged 30 and over Knowledge of the impact of mental health, learning disabilities and poverty on diverse populations
