Institution: The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Endorsement Competencies Courses and Experiences Foreign language PreK-12 – languages other than Latin. The program in the foreign language shall ensure the candidate that has demonstrated the following competencies: 1. Understanding of authentic speech at a normal FRE 1010: Elementary French tempo: FRE 1020: Elementary French FRE 1030: Accelerated Elementary French FRE 2010: Intermediate French FRE 2020: Intermediate French FRE 3150: Advanced Conversation FRE 3110: Phonetics and Linguistics 2. Ability to speak with a command of vocabulary, FRE 2010: Intermediate French pronunciation, and syntax adequate for FRE 2020: Intermediate French expressing thoughts to a native speaker not used to dealing with foreigners; 3. Ability to read and comprehend authentic texts of FRE 2010: Intermediate French average difficulty and of mature content; FRE 2020: Intermediate French FRE 3010,3020: Introduction to French Civilization FRE 3210: Advanced French Composition FRE 3780, 3790: Survey of French Literature 4. Ability to write a variety of texts including FRE 2010: Intermediate French description and narration with clarity and FRE 2020: Intermediate French correctness in vocabulary and syntax; FRE 3010,3020: Introduction to French Civilization FRE 3210: Advanced French Composition

5. Knowledge of geography, history, social FRE 3010,3020: Introduction to French Civilization structure and artistic and literary contributions of the target societies; Two of the following courses: FRE 3780, 3790: Survey of French Literature FRE 4550: French Novel FRE 4570: French Poetry FRE 4950, 4960: Special Topics in French FRE 4550: French Theater FRE 4710: French Literature of the 17th Century FRE 4810: French Literature of the 18th Century FRE 4910: French Literature of the 19th Century 6. Ability to interpret contemporary lifestyles, FRE 3010, 3020: Introduction to French Civilization customs, and cultural patterns of the target societies; * Description of what the institution offers to enable students to develop the knowledge and skills identified in the competency. 7. Understanding of the application of basic FRE 3110: Phonetics and Linguistics concepts of phonology, syntax, FRE 3210: Advanced French Composition and morphology to the teaching of the foreign FRE 4150: Foreign Language Teaching language; 8. Knowledge of the national standards for foreign FRE 4150: Foreign Language Teaching language learning, current proficiency-based objectives of the teaching of foreign languages at the elementary and secondary levels, elementary and secondary methods and techniques for attaining these objectives, the assessment of foreign language skills, the use of media in teaching languages, current curricular developments, the relationship of language study to other areas of the curriculum, and the professional literature of foreign language teaching; and 9. Understanding of and proficiency in grammar, FRE 2010: Intermediate French usage, and mechanics and FRE 2020: Intermediate French their integration in writing; and FRE 3210: Advanced French Composition

10. Participated in opportunities for significant FRE 4180, 4190: Foreign Travel foreign language study or living experiences in FRE 4950, 4960: Special Topics in French this country or abroad, or both. FRE 4970: Independent Research
