PERSONAL STATEMENT

Throughout my life I have been a quiet and introverted person interested in reading and nature. As a young girl I spent a week during the summer at a nature camp just 30 miles from our family home. Although I missed my family while away, I enjoyed my time hiking and exploring so much that I found most of the reading I did during the school year revolved around nature topics. Each summer I looked forward to my week at camp where I could learn more about the outdoors.

I am also very interested in art, and took art classes during my exploratory classes at the middle school and junior high. I entered two drawings in the art show held during the junior high open house, and received an honorable mention. My teacher allowed me to work on a hallway mural with two other students for parent conferences in the spring of my 9th grade year, which I really enjoyed, and she has encouraged me to continue learning more about this subject.

During my time at Shelton High School, I have been enrolled in many different classes. I have particularly enjoyed Math, Spanish, Art and Accounting. However, it was during my Ecology class that I realized how much I enjoyed going out to the streams and learning all about aquatic organisms. My teacher has been an inspiration to me throughout the year and has taught me about the many careers possible in this field.

In addition to my school work I ran on the cross country team, where I earned the Most Improved Runner award, and I participated in Key Club. During my senior year I have worked on my culminating project with our community Literacy Group, tutoring students in the Spanish language after school.

My future plan is to attend a community college for two years. I will then apply to attend a university that has a program in which I could earn a degree in Ecology. I am especially interested in Marine Ecology and hope to do further study after I get a degree in this field. My hope is that I will be able to come back to this area and help improve the quality of water in Puget Sound.
