A Memorial Day parade is planned for Monday, May 31 that will begin at Town Hall, 816 Main Road at 10:00 a.m. and travel south to Beech Grove Cemetery at the intersection on Main Road and Hixbridge Road.

Veterans’ groups, town officials, police officers and fire fighters will march to the cemetery where local troops of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts will lay flowers on the graves of veterans.

Following the laying of the flowers there will be a flag lowering ceremony at Beech Grove Cemetery accompanied by taps and a gun salute by the Vietnam Veterans Honor Guard.

The parade will be preceded by flag lowering and gun salutes at various locations throughout town starting at the VFW Post 8502 on State Road at 8:00 a.m. Other locations will be a ceremony at Latessa Square, town docks at Westport Point where a wreath will be cast into the water, and a wreath hanging at the Fontaine Bridge (Rt. 88). The final ceremony, after the parade and Beech Grove ceremony, will be a lowering of the Town Hall flag to half-mast accompanied by a gun salute by Westport police officers.

The annual parade is alternately sponsored each year by the VFW at 843 State Road, American Legion Post 145 on Sanford Road, and Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 207. This year’s parade is sponsored by the W.A.&R. Ouellette Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8502.

Local residents wait patiently each year for the Westport River Gardeners’ annual Garden Fair, and they are never disappointed. This year’s fair was one for the books says WRG member Marianne Naedele (bottom right photo) as record sales of plants and mulch gave the Westport club a much needed boost to their community projects (such as the “Rockery” at the new fire station.)

Members of the WRG have been quietly beautifying Westport over the years, one small plot at a time. Recent projects are the Town Hall front entrance sidewalk, and Welcome to Westport signage areas.

Their next project will be the new south end fire station on Hixbridge Road. The original spot, known as the “rockery” was demolished to make room the station’s entrance.

The site was replicated to the east of the entrance, and will feature the original stone marker with a new stone wall and planting by the club.

All the perennials left over from the sale will be used to decorate the “Rockery” said WRG chairperson Geri Fortier (pictured left). This is not just your grandmother’s art show. It is a quality exhibition with serious students. “It’s not art therapy, but it is very therapeutic says instructor Madeleine Diogenes (pictured center with grey outfit).

Diogenes has been giving watercolor instruction at the Tiverton Senior Center since 2004. “We meet once a week,” Diogenes said. “Every Tuesday. These aspiring artists with experience ranging from two months to 15 years are wonderful to work with and quite talented.”

A watercolor (below) entitled “Everglades National Park, Florida” was painted by Pierrette C. Dumenco, a Tiverton novice with just two months of know-how!

The Tiverton Senior Center Artisans opened their exhibit Sunday, May 16 at the Tiverton Town Hall with a reception from 2 – 4 p.m. The public was invited and refreshments served. The exhibition, sponsored by the Tiverton Arts Council, will run to the end of June. Viewing hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday thru Friday. Along with 30 watercolors, the exhibit also includes handmade articles from the Knitting and Quilting class at the Senior Center, and photography by Richard Barrett. The exhibit will run through June 1st.

Diogenes took over as instructor after being a member of the class for 15 years. She has taken classes at Bristol Community College and the Fall River Art Association. She also taught water color at a local nursing facility. “It keeps me focused on life, and is very relaxing and stress relieving,” said the animated and energetic Diogenes. Left: Pierrette C. The Tiverton Senior Center, established in 1978, is located in the former Barker School in the north end of Tiverton. A variety of classes are offered on a daily basis along with workshops and seminars. New members in the Watercolor Class are always welcome! Left: “Hibiscus & Daisies” by Yvonne Nolan.
