He proposed that the Board consider scheduling a meeting on Monday, June 30, 2014 @ 5:30 p.m. This proposal will be placed on the 04/21/14 agenda as a consent item.

FOR INFORMATION A. Report: Close Up Mr. Lakatos, Mrs. Weststrate, and a group of 12 KHS students were present to share highlights and activities of their recent Close Up trip to Washington D.C. Students took turns sharing their most memorable and inspiring experiences and shared that even though they are too young to vote, they’ve learned that they can still make an impact on the government and society. The entire group also expressed their appreciation to the Board for their support of this program.

B. Report: UN Model Nations Mr. Thompson and 12 KHS students recently attended the UN Model Nations Conference at Hope College and Mr. Thompson was present to share some of those activities with the Board. During that conference, two KHS delegations received awards and two students, Jose Riveron and Brya Ulusse, were present to share their first hand experiences on how they engaged in real world issues and problem solving simulations along with 2000 other students. They shared highlights and thanked the Board for their support of programs such as this, which allow students to be part of real-life experiences outside of the regular classroom.

C. Report: Classroom Learning Labs Mrs. Lathrop was present to share with board members what has transpired since her report earlier in the fall on Classroom Learning Labs (CLL). She briefly reviewed that a CLL is a live in-classroom observation of a teacher, instructing students, with teachers observing and that it is an actively engaging professional learning opportunity that incorporates collaborative discussions. She shared the CLL opportunities that have taken place during November and March and the feedback that teachers provided on these beneficial experiences. She then shared that future plans include more CLL’s at East and West Elementary next year and to start them at SE and at the secondary levels.

D. Report: Prime Plus Math Mrs. Savage explained the opportunities associated with Prime Plus which is a final set of workshops in a series designed to help with the implementation of the CCSS in mathematics classrooms. Several KHS teachers are currently involved in this learning activity which if funded by Federal grant money. Past workshops have focused on specific math curriculum, with Algebra 2 being offered last year. This year, the focus was on specific pedagogy needed to successfully implement the CCSS by providing staff with a day of implementation. She shared feedback from staff on insights and activities that have aided in their understanding and on items/activities that they have tried in their classrooms which, as a result, have impacted student learning. OTHER MATTERS - None

INTRODUCTION OF MATTERS BY BOARD MEMBERS - Mr. Anderson – enjoyed the student presentations of the Close Up and UN Model Nations highlights and congratulated the students who received awards at the UN Model Nations Conference - both sounded like excellent trips; - Mr. Meyer – nothing; - Mrs. Reidzans – congratulated the students that received awards at the UN Model Nations, adding that she is glad we can provide opportunities like these for kids and is hopeful that we can continue to do so; - Mrs. Sellers – happy for the programs we now have in place but at the same time expressed that it breaks her heart for the cuts that have to be made. She asked that everyone stick together as the focus next year will be to get things turned around while also giving students as many opportunities as possible, regardless of the cuts that need to be made. Mr. Wright expanded on that by stating that after-school clubs are now being added back to the recent return of after-school intramurals at the elementary level; - Mr. Skinner – thanked staff for giving their time, dedication, and leadership for UN Model Nations and Close Up programs; - Mrs. Ward – expressed that it is a sad day as she does not like seeing all of the layoffs because those teachers listed are very dedicated and hardworking, adding that she knows that the staff being retained are going to do their best for the students. She stated that this is another indication that schools need more support from the state because we can’t do it alone, but will do the best with what we have; - Mr. Pomorski – reminded fellow board members, staff, and community members of the KIASB Awards Ceremony & Legislative Dinner Meeting on 4/17/14 – all are invited and encouraged to share with legislators their concerns with public education issues;

ADJOURNMENT President Pomorski adjourned the meeting at 7:42 p.m.
