Neighborhood Technical Assistance Clinic Strengthening Partnerships between Communities and Philanthropies

presents NAACP ON VIEW IN BROOKLYN "Legendary Civil Rights Figure to Boost NAACP in Brooklyn”

Legendary NAACP activist Hazel Dukes will be sharing her experiences in the civil rights movement and her hopes for the future with a select group of New York City women on Tuesday, March 7.

Saundra Thomas from WABC TV will interview Ms. Dukes and ask her about the role of African American women in the civil rights movement and when she herself decided to become involved in the struggle.

"It may be true that every human being has a defining moment in his or her life, a split second when a decision is made to take a stand, grasp an opportunity, or better one's situation in life," says Valerie Oliver- Durrah, president and CEO of the Neighborhood Technical Assistance Clinic, "and we've chosen Hazel Dukes, a person with extraordinary character, to prove this point."

Ms. Dukes will address the Women's Leadership Breakfast at the Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge as part of Women's History Month. The breakfast will begin at 8.30 a.m. with an invocation led by Rev. Kanyere Eaton, Executive Director of The Sister Fund and end at 10.30 a.m. This program is being presented by Valerie Oliver-Durrah, President/CEO of the Neighborhood Technical Assistance Clinic and is being sponsored by the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott and Macys. Rob Simon is our host.

“We must capture the fire to wipe out injustice that lived within our legendary civil rights leaders so that we may work to keep that fire burning,” Ms. Oliver-Durrah said, confident that Ms. Dukes would inspire the women present to carry on her work.

Among the women participating in the women history making program are the Honorable Yvonne Graham, Deputy Borough President of Brooklyn, the Honorable Rosemonde Pierre-Louis, Deputy Borough President of Manhattan and Brenda Scott of Macy’s. Other special invited guests include: Rob Simons (host), Karen Boykin-Towns, Brooke Durrah, Pamela Weekes, Gail Smith, Iris Allen, Sylvia Kinard- Thompson, Rev. Kanyere Eaton, Keiko DeLille, Deidra Towns Blount, Jennifer Jones Austin, Pauline Barfield, Kamyra Harding, Arlette Ferguson Mathis, Dr. Marilyn John, Margot Jordan, Anita Burson, Karin Wilson, Toya Williford, Jennifer Carr, Dr. Marcella Maxwell, Kim Lemon, Dorothy Worrell, Tammy Greer-Brown, C. Peart, Kamarita Boyland, Elwanda Young, Janel Gross, Debra Smallwood, Dominique Adam, Camile Simone Gayle, Chantel Bell, Rev. Emma Jordan- Simpson, Crystal Love, Pam Mosley, Latika Brockington, and Cheryl Cole.

It is expected that the Brooklyn Chapter of the NAACP, where Karen Boykin-Towns is the Chair, will greatly benefit from this program by increased memberships and additional support for her chapter. The Brooklyn NAACP will be celebrating its 2006 “Celebrating Our Heritage” Freedom Fund Reception and Awards Ceremony at the Brooklyn Bridge Marriott on April 5th from 5:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Bruce S. Gordon, President/CEO, will be in attendance which is his first visit to Brooklyn since assuming his post.
