Google Earth Project Plate Tectonics
Instructions: Choose one of the five following regions of the world: North America – Pacific Coast East Asia South America – Pacific Coast Africa Europe
Get a paper outline regional map from Mr. B. First come first served!
On this outline map do the following:
1. Identify 5 major earthquakes (Richter scale 6.0 or larger) that occurred in your region. Plot these earthquakes on your map.
2. Identify 3 – 5 most recent volcanic eruptions (1800 – present) in your region. Plot these volcanoes on your map.
3. Identify 3 – 5 major landforms (mountain range, rift valley, underwater trench, underwater ridges, major fault lines, etc) that are associated with the physical forces of volcanism and earthquakes in your region. Plot their locations on your map.
4. Plot the location of the following cities from your region on your map:
North America – Pacific Coast East Asia Houston, TX Beijing, China Los Angeles, CA Manila, Philippines Phoenix, AZ Taipei, Taiwan Portland, OR Tokyo, Japan San Francisco, CA Seoul, South Korea
South America – Pacific Coast Africa Asuncion, Paraguay Addis Abeba, Ethiopia Buenos Aires, Argentina Harare, Zimbabwe La Paz, Bolivia Kigali, Rwanda Lima, Peru Mogadishu, Somalia Santiago, Chile Nairobi, Kenya
Europe Athens, Greece Madrid, Spain Paris, France Rome, Italy Vienna, Austria Google Earth Project – Plate Tectonics page 2
Open up a word document on your computer. Type the names of everybody in your group (first name and last name) in the upper left hand corner of the page. Type your class period beneath that. Save this document to your N-Drive right away. Save early, save often.
Then in paragraph format answer the following (different people in your group answers different questions):
1. Provide evidence for each of your 5 cities as high risk (or medium or low risk) for a major earthquake.
2. Which of your 5 cities are at high risk for volcanic eruption?
3. Choose one of the cities on your map and research how this city is prepared (or not prepared) for an earthquake (search terms might be: city name + “earthquake preparedness” for example). Write a complete paragraph outlining the city’s preparedness.
4. For each of the major landforms you selected, hypothesis how you think they formed. Use your knowledge of the four major types of plate boundaries (convergent [subduction], divergent, transformational) to answer this question.
Be sure to use proper English, grammar, and spelling. Question #3 requires research, so make sure that you use quotations and avoid plagiarism. Use MLA format to cite your sources (and include the URL in the citation).
When all the paragraphs are complete, use a flash drive to combine all of the text into one Word document and save it to your N-drive. Then copy and paste the document to my drop box. I will grade both the regional map and the word document.
