NOVEL STUDY LOST IN THE BARRENS

You will read the novel, Lost in the Barrens by Farley Mowat. While and after reading the novel you will complete the activities listed below. Class time and lessons will be given, to enable you to work on the reading and activities at school, but you will have to do some reading at home. All completed activities will be placed in a FLAP BOOK. The novel must be read by May 1 and the novel study FLAP BOOK is due on May 15. Criteria for each activity appears on the back of this page. ACTIVITIES:
COVER: The title of the novel, the author's name, and you name must appear on the cover of the flap book. Include a sketch of an event from the novel.
SUMMARY: Using no more than three sentences per chapter, describe the main events of each chapter. Be sure to use complete and proper sentences.
COMIC STRIP: You will re-create an important event from the book in a 6-8 frame comic strip. Speech bubbles and narration should be used to explain what is happening.
INTERVIEW: Prepare the script of a radio interview between a radio announcer and one or two of the main characters. Write out the questions and the answers given by the characters. Show what you have learned about the characters and what the characters have learned about themselves throughout the novel. (How has the character grown or developed throughout the story? What brought about this growth?)
PUZZLE PAGE: Prepare a puzzle using 'new to you' vocabulary from the novel. Include a minimum of ten new words. Be sure to include the word and the definition. (Eg. Make a crossword puzzle, the clues would be the definitions and the answers would be the vocabulary. There are other possibilities as well.)
BOOK POSTER: Create a poster which advertises the book. Focus on the audience as this would be a poster that would hang in a library or bookstore and its goal is to lure the reader to buy this book. Your poster should include catch phrases or interesting comments from other readers or critics. Include the author, title, price, and publisher. EXPECTATIONS FOR THE FLAP BOOK NOVEL STUDY
COVER: ⃝ Is the title of the novel and its author clearly and neatly displayed? 1 2 3 4 ⃝ Is there an appropriate sketch/drawing to accompany the title? ⃝ Is the cover in colour or shaded? Is it done neatly? SUMMARY: ⃝ Is there a summary for each chapter? 1 2 3 4 ⃝ Does the summary describe the main events of the chapter? ⃝ Are only 1, 2 or 3 sentences used for the summary? COMIC STRIP: ⃝ Is the comic strip 6 to 8 frames in length? ⃝ Do speech bubbles match the type of dialogue? ⃝ Is narration given in at least two of the frames? 1 2 3 4 ⃝ Is there enough dialogue in the speech bubbles to clearly explain what is happening in the comic strip? ⃝ Is the dialogue successive and easy to follow? ⃝ Is the comic neatly done and easy to read. INTERVIEW: ⃝ Are the 'characters' introduced? ⃝ Have relevant questions been asked and answered? 1 2 3 4 ⃝ Has the interview portrayed the characters realistically? ⃝ Have any main events from the novel been included? PUZZLE PAGE: ⃝ Has the puzzle been neatly created? ⃝ Have interesting or challenging words been used? 1 2 3 4 ⃝ Have at least ten vocabulary words been included? ⃝ Are the definitions part of the puzzle? ⃝ Do the definitions clearly explain the word? BOOK POSTER: ⃝ Does the poster include the title of the novel and its author? 1 2 3 4 ⃝ Does the poster attract attention with comments, effective lettering, and colour? ⃝ Is the cost of the book and its publisher included? MECHANICS OF WRITING: ⃝ Is there evidence of proofreading and editing? ⃝ Is the number of spelling errors at a minimum amount? ⃝ Are sentences structured properly? 1 2 3 4 ⃝ Do sentences begin with a capital letter and end with proper punctuation? ⃝ Is the writing legible? ⃝ Are verb tenses consistent and is correct grammar used consistently?
