Dear First Grade Parents

Dear First Grade Parents,

Attached to this letter will be our Spelling list 7 words. Please place this on your REFRIGERATOR or in a SAFE PLACE for you to refer to all week for HOMEWORK. We will be using these words in our classroom all week as well. We will be sending home a new list every Friday to give students the opportunity for more practice. Each list will be 30 words long. Thanks for all your support!

Practice, practice, practice! Have a great weekend!

Sincerely, The First Grade Team

Directions

Parents: Say the word without sounding the word out *If they need help, hold up fingers. For example, for the word, “it” ask them how many letters does the word have (2) and how many sounds the word has (2). Hold up two separated fingers. Ask them to sound as you touch one finger (they sound /i/) and then touch the other finger (they sound /t/). If the word was, “she” hold up three fingers, two together to represent /sh/ and one to represent /e/. Ask them how many letters (3) and how many sounds the word has (2). Ask them to sound as you touch the two adjoined fingers (they sound /sh/) and then touch the other finger (they sound /e/). If you choose to use your fingers, PLEASE make sure that you are allowing your child to read from left to right, which is backwards to you. We use this method in class everyday!

First grader: Say the word and softly say the sound(s) of the word. Write the word while saying the sounds softly. Mark the word if needed. Check the word. Go to the next word.

Hint: if your child reads this list for SPELLING (sound each sound then saying the word (/i/ /t/ - it) and then reads this list for READING (saying the word – like in a book (it)), they will be more likely to EXCEL in spelling!
