GUIDELINES FOR JUNIOR PROMOTION

CLINICAL (MD) LECTURER TO ASSISTANT PROFESSOR Dear Colleague:

Below please find the latest guidelines for promotion from C l in ical (MD) Lecturer to Assistant Professor. Please review the criteria for promotion and procedural information in this document as they are essential to a successful promotion. Please make certain that your documentation is complete.

Prior to initiating your request for promotion to the rank of Assistant Professor, you should meet with: (i) your Psychiatrist-in-Chief, and (ii) your University Division Head, to discuss your eligibility for promotion.

A few important points, it is the responsibility of the Psychiatrist-in-Chief of each setting to ensure that all faculty are made aware of the policy and the deadlines for submission of documentation. It is the responsibility of the candidate for promotion that all materials submitted are complete and conform to the Guidelines for Promotion.

1. FIRM DEADLINE - MARCH 31, 2015 2. CATEGORIE S FOR PROMOT ION Candidates can be promoted to Assistant Professor under one of the following two categories: i) Advanced Degree: If the faculty member, who holds a lecturer appointment, completes a recognized graduate program, he/she may be considered for promotion to the Assistant Professor rank. The program must have been completed as documented by successful defense of a thesis or awarding of the degree before submission of the request for promotion. It is expected that the candidate will have at least one or two published first author peer-reviewed publications at the time of request for promotion; or ii) Sustained commitment to the academic mission: If the faculty member demonstrates a sustained commitment to teaching, research and/or creative professional activity over a period of time as a Lecturer (at least three (3) years), he/she may be considered for promotion to the Assistant Professor rank. An application based on teaching excellence and or creative professional development (CPA) should be supported by a teaching dossier and/or a CPA dossier as applicable.

3. DOCUMENTATION a. Candidate's detailed letter of request for consideration for promotion addressed to Dr. Molyn Leszcz Professor and Chair (Interim). The letter MUST state which CATEGORY the candidate should be evaluated under - please refer to 2(i) & 2(ii) above.

b. Candidate's letter of support from his/her hospital Psychiatrist- in-Chief.

c. Candidate's letter of support from his/her University Division Director.

d. Two a d di t io n a l i nte r n a l l e t t e rs of suppor t . Internal referees should be able to attest to the candidate's achievement in education, research and/or creative professional activity.

NB: The Faculty of Medicine defines an internal reference as one who is NOT in the same division or hospital as the candidate. You may choose someone at the same hospital IF they are in a different Department of Psychiatry Division, or, if they hold an appointment with a different university department.

A Teaching Dossier (if applicable) a nd/ o r a CPA Dossier (if applicable) - 10 pages MAXIMUM/each. Please note that you may also solicit and include student testimonials. These may be in addition to the 10 page dossier.

NB: Candidates who hold additional appointments in Departments other than Psychiatry should also submit a letter from the cross-appointing Chief, Chair or Dean in support of their promotion.
