Give each participant a copy of the case study. Allow them to work in teams to reduce time needed for the activity. When finished have a few participants share the information they found and how this relates to activities they may be involved with in their regions.

Your local economic development group is putting together a proposal to attract a new business to your area. They contact their local WorkOne office for assistance in gathering information for their proposal and they are transferred to your desk. The prospective business is an automobile parts manufacturer that makes brake parts for a major automobile manufacturer.

The group needs to know how many people are in your area that can do the following jobs: assemblers, production machine operators, and shipping and receiving workers. They also need to know the wage rates for each occupation. They would like to draw their workforce from the local labor market area so provide this information for the local commuting area. They need to know whether your area is a labor surplus area and what the current unemployment rate is.
