2016 Homer Community Science Scholarship

2016 HOMER COMMUNITY SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP A Scholarship Fund of the Homer Foundation

The Homer Community Science Scholarship was established by Homer High School Science teacher Stan Eller in 2000 to encourage Homer High School graduating seniors to pursue the life sciences in their post secondary education. The community continues to support the fund, and in turn the fund will be here to provide support to students pursuing the life sciences – forever.

PROCEDURES FOR APPLYING

The Homer Community Science Scholarship is available to Homer High School graduating seniors. No one related to the donor, members of the review committee, the Homer Foundation Board of Trustees or its employees shall be eligible for this scholarship. Students who plan to pursue a degree in life science in college and want to apply for a scholarship awarded by the Homer Community Science Scholarship Committee should prepare a SCHOLARSHIP FOLDER. The folder should include the following:

1. Completed application (found on the following pages) 2. Transcript 2. Minimum of two letters of recommendation (from adults not related to you) 3. Personal essay

BE EXACT IN THE PREPARATION OF YOUR SCHOLARSHIP FOLDER. IT WILL BE EXAMINED BY PEOPLE ON THE SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE WHO MAY OR MAY NOT KNOW YOU. IT MIGHT BE THE ONLY IMPRESSION THEY HAVE OF YOU.

After you have completed this packet, please make 7 copies of it for the members of the Science Scholarship Fund Selection Committee. The scholarship applications must be received by 4 p.m., Thursday, April 9 th , 2015 and should be turned in to the HHS counselor’s office, or the Homer Foundation, located at 3733 Ben Walters Lane, or mailed to the Homer Foundation, PO Box 2600, Homer, AK 99603.

HELPFUL HINTS IN APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS:

1. Your folder represents your qualities as a candidate. Present your information neatly and accurately. Have someone PROOFREAD your essay for spelling and grammatical errors.

2. Keep the margins as even as possible.

3. The division of words should be minimal.

4. Do not fold the application or letters. Envelopes are not required.

5. Read through the instructions carefully and follow them precisely.

6. Be neat, prompt, and efficient - it will pay off. 2016 Homer Community Science Scholarship

If you receive a scholarship, one of the most important things to do is to write a thank you to the Homer Community Science Scholarship Committee via a letter to the editor of both local papers. The Homer Science Scholarship Fund at the Homer Foundation is a community based scholarship that depends on local contributions. If people are aware of the fund and what we are doing, they will be much more likely to donate money to the scholarship fund in the future. Your letters to the editor will be an immense help to us in our efforts to secure donations in the future.

SCHOLARSHIP FOLDER:

1. Your SCHOLARSHIP FOLDER should be bound with a soft cover. 2. Include a copy of your senior picture on the cover sheet. (Photo is optional) 3. Arrange your folder in the order given in the scholarship directions below.
