MESA Undergraduate Scholarships

MESA Undergraduate Scholarships 2012-13

MESA Undergraduate Scholarships are available through the generous support of Pacific Gas and Electric Company which is committed to investing in education in the communities it serves. These scholarships recognize students for their achievements and pursuit of academic success. Twelve scholarships of $1000 each will be awarded to MESA undergraduate students who demonstrate academic merit, financial need, and outstanding leadership.

Eligibility Applications will be open to MESA undergraduates from the following community college campuses:

American River College Contra Costa College Sacramento City College Bakersfield College Cosumnes River College San Joaquin Delta College Butte College Gavilan College Santa Rosa Junior College Cabrillo College Hartnell College Skyline College Cañada College Los Medanos College Solano College City College of San Francisco Mendocino College Woodland College College of the Sequoias Mission College Yuba College College of the Siskiyous Napa Valley College

Applicant Requirements:

1. Must be a full time undergraduate student with a minimum GPA of 3.0

2. Must be a declared engineering major or computer science major

3. Must have a documented financial need

Instructions and Submission Deadline A complete scholarship application package will include the following:  Completed and signed application  One page résumé  Unofficial Academic Transcripts (must have school  Recommendation Form completed and submitted by name) MESA Director  Essays

Scholarship Application Process & Selection Criteria:

 Deadline: Complete scholarship application packages must be submitted electronically to [email protected] by 5 p.m. (PST) March 15, 2013. Any application packages received after the deadline will not be considered.

 Upon submission of a complete scholarship package MESA Statewide will email the listed Center Director requesting the recommendation form be completed and sent back via email within 7 days.

 Application packages will be evaluated by a panel of industry volunteers beginning April 1, 2013.

 A Notification of Award email will be sent to winning applicants on or before May 1, 2013.

 Student must acknowledge award letter within 7 days of email receipt.

 The scholarship check will be sent directly to the student. Student will need to provide a social security number and sign a W9 form in order receive the award.

Awards and Recognition:

 Scholarship recipients will be recognized in appropriate MESA marketing materials

 Scholars will be acknowledged at MESA Center year-end recognition events and campus ceremonies

ESSAY TOPICS: Write essays on both of the following topics with a maximum of two pages each, double-spaced, and 12-point font: 1. How will you use your engineering degree to achieve your professional goals after completing your degree? How has participating in MESA enhanced your ability to achieve your academic, professional or personal goals? 2. Challenges at Pacific Gas & Electric Company include delivering safe and reliable energy to our customers in California, reducing or offsetting the greenhouse gas emissions in a carbon-constrained economy, increasing production of energy from renewable sources (i.e. wind, solar, biomass and geothermal) and facing a shortage of talent entering the workforce. Choose one of these issues, or another issue relevant to the energy sector you believe is important, and discuss its significance related to your area of studies or interests.
