DOOR KNOCKER PROCEDURE 1. Use scissors to cut out pattern 2. Obtain a board 7 ¼” wide and ¾” thick from the instructor 3. Measure to length, 10” from end of board and draw line using square 4. Crosscut on line using back saw. 5. Place patterns on wood, leave room for base 6. Have teacher check it 7. Trace around bird and wing 8. Measure 3 ½ “ over from edge for base marking at top and bottom 9. Draw base on wood using ruler. 10. Remove base using back saw 11. Practice using jack plane on edge of bird 12. Smooth rough edge of base with Jack Plane 13. Use coping saw to cut out bird and wing 14. Draw center rectangle on base 15. Drill ¼” holes inside each corner of rectangle 16. Assemble coping saw through hole and cut out rectangle 17. Slice wing in half 18. File edges and ends of all pieces 19. File inside of rectangle on base 20. Sand all pieces with 120 grit sandpaper 21. Sand all pieces with 220 grit sandpaper 22. Drill 11/64” hole in 2 opposing corners of base 23. Drill countersink hole in top of 11/64” holes 24. Draw string slot ½” wide on back of base 25. Cut string slot lines ½ way through board with back saw 26. Remove center waste with chisel 27. Stamp first and last name on back of base 28. Draw holes on bird 29. Have teacher check it 30. Drill ½” hole under wing 31. Drill ¼” hole in edge of bird, intersecting with ½” hole 32. Drill 1/8” hole in bird’s belly for the nail that the bird rocks on. 33. Poke rope into ¼” hole and pull it out the ½” hole 34. Tie a double knot in the end of the rope and stuff into ½” hole 35. Glue wings on bird 36. Have teacher drill 3/32” pilot hole in the side of base 37. Assemble bird on base making sure base slot is facing down and in back 38. Slide bead onto rope and tie a knot to hold it on 39. Paint 2 color coats and 2 clear coats. Glue on eyes. 40. Fill out a grading sheet and bring it to the teacher with your woodpecker
