AP Poem - #1: How does poetry come to be?
Using the following poems as examples, write your own poem that utilizes the poetic devices we are studying first, particularly imagery, simile, metaphor, personification, apostrophe and/or metonymy. Be sure to pay attention to your diction – denotation and connotation are devices you should consider as you choose your words beyond simple rhythm, rhyming, and rhyme scheme. You may be asked to present your poem and the elements you used to create meaning/purpose. In the words of Mr. Keating, “Just don’t let your poetry be ordinary.”
Poems to use as inspiration: “The Eagle” p. 682 “The Widow’s Lament in Springtime” p. “The Whipping” p. 689-690 736-737 “The Mirror” p. 715 “It sifts from Leaden Sieves” p. 749-750 “Metaphors” p. 758
Requirements: 1. no fewer than 10 lines 2. must use effectively at least one of the literary devices identified above 3. must be original and thoughtful 4. must be legible – if I can’t read I am not grading it. (Type it maybe?)
The Teacher’s Lament at Research Paper Time By J. Beav
Regret is my own demise The remorse in my heart is As I gaze at the rows of thought, Strongest when I read Black carbonite or blue ink Of Man’s inhumanity Forming special characters In a world gone mad Across a white sheet of parchment, Written plainly and with bad grammar Especially at this point in time While surrounded by When tulips push the soil Budding maples and crimson crocus. Reaching for the sun’s nourishment. Today my students told me For twenty years That there is a way, I have read the supposed wisdom “A way to be good again.” Of scholarly people. Tomorrow I walk For forty plus years I have longed To the smelly glorious dumpster. For the time of rebirth, renewal I feel that I would like very much After a long cold sheltering, To share with it Have longed for the sweet sour smell Words, words, words. Of freshly cut grass.
