The John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship

Mission Statement: John A. Candela was a lifetime Glen Ridge, New Jersey resident, who was killed in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In order to rise above the hateful and tragic events of 9-11, The John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship was developed. This Memorial Scholarship is designed to promote hope and kindness, thereby honoring values that John embraced throughout his life.

With Whom We Accomplish Our Mission: The John A. Memorial Scholarship is a Glen Ridge, New Jersey scholarship benefiting qualified students graduating from Glen Ridge High School. Although the qualified student(s) may use the one-time scholarship to attend a 4-year college or university of their choice, The John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship is specifically intended for those who plan on studying Music, Finance and/or Business.

The John A. Candela Memorial Scholars are Glen Ridge High School Seniors whose records reveal the following qualities:

 Academic Talent  Social Commitment  Strong Sense of Community and Social Concerns  Leadership Potential  Willingness to Extend Themselves to Others in Need  Financial Need

The Selection Process: The selection process begins when a Glen Ridge High School Senior submits a completed application, which includes the following:

1. The John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship Application 2. Glen Ridge High School Transcripts 3. List of Extracurricular Activities 4. Two Letters of Recommendation 5. Two Essays: o One previously submitted as part of applicant’s college applications o One addressing the following two questions: Why applicant applied for The John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship? And Why applicant believes that he/she should be chosen for The John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship? Application Procedures

The Selection Process (Continued): Each application is carefully considered and evaluated according to the following criteria:

 Personal Integrity  Academic promise  Communication skills  Leadership abilities  School and community involvement  Financial need

The John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship Committee will evaluate each completed application, as well as any additional input and analysis received from the Glen Ridge High School faculty. Applications will be reviewed as they are submitted during the month of May. John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship Frequently Asked Questions

 When is the deadline for submitting the application? The deadline is May 17, 2013. Your application must be post-marked by this date. Since the postmark is what matters, there is no advantage to sending your application by overnight delivery service.

 I missed the deadline. Can I still apply? If you have a legitimate reason, beyond your control for missing the deadline, you may request an extension. You must let the Glen Ridge Guidance Office know, so that they may make arrangements with the John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship Committee, so that the application submitted after the deadline could be accepted for review.

 When are the letters of recommendation and school transcripts due? Can they be sent separately from my application? Letters of recommendation and essays are to be included with your application. Official transcripts may be sent separately or included with the application. Please note that all required documents are required by the May 25th deadline.

 Do my letters of recommendation need to be written by teachers or can they come from anyone? Two letters of recommendation are required. Your high school guidance counselor, a teacher or principal should write at least one of these letters. The second letter may be submitted by anyone who knows you well and can attest to your character, leadership ability, and commitment to community service or academic achievement.

 What standardized test results are required? We require a complete set of SAT scores and ACT scores. The applicant can use the best of his/her verbal, math and essay scores to represent their SAT score. Regarding the ACT score, the applicant must submit the composite score with writing.

 Are there minimum scores? Although competition for scholarships is intense, each individual application will be thoroughly reviewed based on the whole student. As a result, SAT and ACT scores are evaluated along with grade point averages, class rank, essays, letters of recommendation and financial need.

 Are there income limits? Financial need is a factor that we consider in awarding the John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship. If you think that you will be eligible for financial aid at the colleges to which you are applying, then you should definitely apply for a John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship.

 Whose income should I report if my parents are separated or divorced? If my parents have remarried, do I include my stepparents’ income? Please list the income of the parent with whom you reside, as well your non-custodial parent’s income. John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship Frequently Asked Questions

 Do you need verification of my parents’ income? The application asks your parents for their adjusted gross income on last year’s federal income tax return, the return that they filed when the applicant was a junior in high school. By their signatures, they also agree to provide proof of income, including copies of income tax returns, if required.

 Can I e-mail or fax my application? Applying via e-mail or fax is not possible due to the following sections: o Parent/Guardian Signature(s) o Glen Ridge High School Guidance Counselor Signature and Information

 Do I need to be a U.S. citizen and a permanent Glen Ridge, New Jersey resident in order to apply for a John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship? Yes.

 Can I use the John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship at any college? The scholarship may be used at any degree-granting four-year college. Recipients are chosen based on their desire to study Music, Finance and/or Business.

 If I am awarded the John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship, how do I get the scholarship monies? The John A. Candela Scholarship award will be made out to both you and the four-year college that you plan to attend. The check will be given directly to you so that you could have the college credit your account accordingly.

 If I am awarded other scholarships or financial aid, does it affect my eligibility for the John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship? No. You are still eligible for the John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship if you receive other scholarships or financial aid.

 If chosen to receive the John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship, when will I be notified? The successful applicant to receive the John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship will be notified by the Glen Ridge High School Guidance Department prior to the Glen Ridge High School Academic Awards assembly.

 Will applicants who did not qualify for the John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship be notified? We will not be notifying those students who were not chosen to receive the John A. Candela Memorial Scholarship.
