“It’s not that I’m so smart, it’s just that I stay with problems longer.” –Albert Einstein

Course Description: This class provides an introduction to trigonometry and its applications. Specific topics include: triangle trigonometry, trigonometric functions, trigonometric identities and equations, applications of trigonometry, analytic geometry, and exponential and logarithmic functions.

Major Units: Chapter 0: Prelim Review Chapter 4: Applications of Trig Chapter 1: Triangle Trig Chapter 5: Analytic Trig Chapter 2: Trig Functions Chapter 6: Exponentials and Logs Chapter 3: Trig Identities and Equations

Learning Objectives: Upon completion of course, students will be able to: • Apply right triangle trig ratios, law of sines and law of cosines to real world situations • Prove trigonometric identities and apply them to the problem solving process • Utilize trigonometry to solve problems in the complex plane • Form connections between trigonometry and analytic geometry • Solve exponential and logarithmic equations and apply those techniques to multi-step application problems • Model periodic trigonometric functions, their inverses and utilize translation theorems. • Extend the domain of trigonometric functions using the unit circle • Explain how the unit circle in the coordinate plane enables the extension of trigonometric functions to all real numbers, interpreted as radian measures of angles traversed counterclockwise around the unit circle.

Class Preparedness/Supplies: Students must come to class prepared to learn.  Graphing calculators are required for daily use (no cell phone calculators will be allowed).  In addition, notebook paper and pencils (NO PEN!!!) are required to complete assignments.  Three-ring binder for organizational use of notes, assignments, quizzes/tests

Grading Policy: Students earn points for daily assignments, projects, quizzes, and tests. Grades are updated regularly and available for online viewing. At the end of each semester, grades will be determined by the following grading scale: Homework: 20% A: 90-100% Quizzes: 20% B: 80-89% Tests: 40% C: 70-79% Final Exam: 20% D:60-69% F: below 60% Tests and Quizzes: Students will be given regular quizzes to test understanding of content along the way. At the end of each semester, the single lowest quiz grade will be dropped. A test will be given at the end of each unit of study. Tests will be supplemented with study materials and reviews that directly address content being assessed. Missed tests or quizzes must be made up the day you return to class. There are NO RETAKES on tests or quizzes.

Homework: In order to be successful, it is critical to practice new ideas and concepts. Homework is assigned and collected on a daily basis. Each assignment is due at the beginning of the period. Homework is graded on a scale of 1 to 10. In order to receive full credit on homework assignments, students must complete homework on time, do all of the problems, and show all of their work. If an excused absence occurs, students have one day per missed class to turn in assignments.

Policies: Act with kindness Be respectful to each other, to me, and to the things in our classroom--this means putting your phone away during notes and not writing on desks. Work together This course is highlighted with collaboration--class discussion, group work, and pair- sharing. There is a lot to be learned from your peers and having the opportunity to articulate, challenge, and defend ideas will strengthen every individuals mathematical understanding. We are all in this together so let’s work together. No cheating Cheating is not tolerated. If you are caught cheating, you will be given a zero and disciplinary actions will follow. Food and Drink Food is allowed as long as it is not a distraction. Reusable water bottles are highly encouraged. Electronic Devices Cell phones, IPods, and other electronic devices will NOT be tolerated during class time. Cell phone calculators are not allowed on any assignment or test.

Website: If you are absent, please check my website to see what you missed. My website includes a tentative unit schedule and lists all homework assignments.

Additional Support: Further academic support is offered through the academic center located in the media center—no appointment necessary. Hours: Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:30-5:00pm. If at any point you wish to get a private tutor, your guidance counselor can provide you with a district approved list.

Let’s get ready for a Mathemagical year!! 
