1 [3908-1] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE REPUBLIC OF 12 CHINA (TAIWAN) FOR ITS CONTRIBUTIONS TO 13 PROMOTE WORLD PEACE, FREEDOM, AND HUMAN 14 RIGHTS, AND FOR SUPPORTING ITS EFFORTS TOWARDS 15 THE PEACE AND STABILITY OF THE ASIAN PACIFIC 16 REGION. 17 18 Whereas, the Republic of China and the United States of America 19 are friends and allies of long standing, both of which dearly 20 cherish and commonly share values and ideals of freedom, 21 democracy, and human rights; and 22 23 Whereas, the Republic of China has distinguished itself in the 24 areas of education, economy, and democratization, being the 25 world’s nineteenth largest economy, the United States’ eighth 26 largest trading partner, as well as the fifth largest market for the 27 United States’ agricultural products; and 28 29 Whereas, the State of South Carolina and Taiwan have enjoyed 30 long and mutually beneficial sister-state relations since 1981 with 31 the prospect of further enhancing the association; and 32 33 Whereas, the twenty-three million inhabitants of Taiwan are 34 hard-working and caring people who have been compassionately 35 assisting needy people of many countries in humanitarian relief, 36 medical assistance, and technical cooperation in a wide variety of 37 aspects; and 38 39 Whereas, people on Taiwan are peace-loving and entitled to the 40 basic right of living free from fear; and 41
1 [3908] 1 1 Whereas, the Taiwan Straits is an indispensable water passage 2 serving as an economic lifeline between the East Asian and the 3 Southeast Asian countries in particular, and its peace and stability 4 is vital to that of the Asia Pacific region; and 5 6 Whereas, the threat of the use of force against the Republic of 7 China in any form, including the deployment of missiles aimed at 8 Taiwan along the coastline of the strait, is apparently menacing to 9 the peace and stability of our region and should not be tolerated. 10 Now, therefore, 11 12 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 13 concurring: 14 15 That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South 16 Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend the Republic 17 of China (Taiwan) for its contributions to promote world peace, 18 freedom, and human rights, and for supporting its efforts towards 19 the peace and stability of the Asian Pacific region. 20 21 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 22 Maggie Tien, Director of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office 23 in Atlanta. 24 ----XX---- 25
