Early Childhood Education (Tutor purposes)
Aims Students Should: Understand the types and stages of play, understand the integrated nature of play and child development Explore the benefits and be ale to relate them to activities. Plan and implement a range of play activities appropriate to stages of child development (See assignment briefs) Understand the role and responsibility of the childcare worker when playing with children.
Module is divided into three units
SLO (Objectives – Students must be able to; Unit 1 understanding Play
Types, stages and patterns of play 0-6yrs and benefits of play Identify factors that influence play and explore changing patterns Encourage personal choice for children List features of a supportive play environment Identify the role of the adult Must know appropriate safety standards Relate theory of play to own practice in childcare work
Unit 2 Play Activities
List a range of topics of interest to children Devise and evaluate play activities that relate to a no of curriculum subject areas (see mod desc) and relate to types of play. Demonstrate storytelling techniques (0-6yrs)
Unit 3 Toys, Games and Equipment
Describe a range of suitable play materials and equipments and demonstrate how they assist in the development of the child. Assess the value of a toy, game or equipment Identify a range of books available for children from 0-6yrs List a range of materials and resources that can aid stories Demonstrate the use of displays a learning tools (It is strongly recommended to cover child dev first) Early childhood Education
The purpose of this module is to allow you to investigate the purpose and potential of play activities during children’s development from 0-6yrs. You will observe good practice, equality of opportunity and respect for diversity in lifestyles, religion and culture in early years care.
You will learn to devise activities that promote early learning through the process of play for children 0-6yrs.
The module is divided into three units:

Assignment 1 30%
You are required to devise a play activity for a group of children aged 0- 6yrs. In consultation with an adult in a supervisory role, you must plan, deliver and evaluate the play activity.
Assignment 2 30%
You are required to select either a toy, Equipment or Play area and develop a range of criteria with which you will assess the item.
Using the criteria you will evaluate the uses and value of the chosen piece or area. You should make recommendations as to whether the chosen piece/area should be changed/improved or not and provide reason.
Skills Demonstration – 40%
You are required to carry out an oral presentation to a child/group of children. You be assessed using one of the following techniques.

Assignment 1 30%
You are required to devise a play activity for a group of children aged 0- 6yrs. In consultation with an adult in a supervisory role, you must plan, deliver and evaluate the play activity.
Planning: You must provide a written record of consultation with an adult in a supervisory role. You will provide an outline of the *benefits to the child/group Details of materials or resources required must be submitted.
Implementation: A written record of how the activity was carried out.
Evaluation: A reflection of your role in the activity An evaluation of the impact of the play activity on the group and future uses of the activity
*When planning the play activity, consider types of play and how they impact on the overall development of a child eg creative play. Also consider activities that promote maths, literacy and science, human and social learning, music or movement and IT. Choose one of these areas and focus on the benefits of your activity for that particular area.

Breakdown of assignment
Item/piece/area: You must first provide a detailed description of chosen item and explain your choice. Also include a visual presentation.
Criteria: Then provide a breakdown of your selected criteria and explain your reasons.
Evaluation: Using the selected criteria evaluate the use and value of the chosen piece or area. Provide a detailed assessment.
Recommendations for improvements or not: Please provide a written recommendation for how this piece could be altered or improved and explain your reasoning. Where appropriate provide sketches of the new and improved model.
Skills Demonstration – 40%
You must provide an appropriate technique for an oral presentation to a child/group of children based on the following

Effective implementation – 10 marks A detailed step by step account of how the activity was delivered. No of children and adults present, time and location should be stated. - 6
Account should be objectively stated at this point. – 2
Visual aids should be provided to be support account – 2 marks
Evaluation – 10 marks A detailed evaluation of the impact of the play activity. Reference needs to be made to original plan and expected outcomes of activity. An evaluation as to why benefits were or were not achieved. – 5 marks
A reflection of role in the activity - were they organised and in control, intervened only when necessary? Did they consider all eventualities and handle the unexpected. Considerable reflection needed for full marks –(5)

Criteria Detailed description of the chosen piece – 2 marks
A visual presentation must be provided – 2 marks
Comprehensive and appropriate criteria must be selected -3 marks
An explanation for selected criteria – 3 marks
Candidate must assess in detail the use of the item. For full marks this must be detailed, appropriate and relevant. – 10 marks
Recommendation – candidates should consider practical and valuable improvements for piece. These should be clearly outlined and well expressed. Detailed required for full marks. – 10 marks Early childhood Education Marking Scheme - Skills Demonstration
Selection of appropriate Technique – 5 marks Students are required to select a technique that is age and location appropriate, interesting and exciting to children and best tells the story.
Effectives performance – 20 marks
Competent responses by the candidate to verbal and non verbal cues – 5 marks. Candidate must engage the children and respond to their cues effectively, if method of evidence is auditory it is the responsibility of candidate to ensure that this can be clearly heard.
Effective interaction with the children – 5 marks. Candidate must interact with children and organise participation by the children. Again this be clearly heard.
Use of voice - 5 marks Clear, slow, good dictation, use of tone and expression – 5 marks
Appropriate use of aids/resources – 5 marks Visual presentation required for full marks.
Evaluation – 15 marks
Evaluation of resources used – 5 marks Needs to be thorough, well balanced and appropriate
