Work and translation experience

Specialties: Patents, engineering (mechanical, electrical etc.), computer-related contracts and manuals, chemistry, biology, medicine, legal, social science, and non-technical.

More than ten years’ experience as a full-time technical translator (Japanese-English, Chinese-English) from 1997 to present.

Did many Chinese-English academic translations at the University of Washington in the late 1980s and Japanese-English academic translations at Keio University throughout the 1990s, some of which have been published professionally. Have recently done some additional work in this area, including a report delivered recently by a Japanese academic at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York City.

Did approximately 900 patent and utility model registration bulletin translations over the last 12.5 years, covering such fields as chemistry, biochemistry, medicine, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, mechanical engineering, electronics, electronic machinery and devices, etc.

Did a large volume of intellectual property litigation related to patent filings, involving translation of correspondence between the Japan Patent Office and litigants and including notices of reasons for rejection of a patent application, appeals, rejections on a appeal, etc.

Did many projects involving translation of internal documents such as inventor notebooks and working group reports, from subjects ranging from pharmaceuticals to photolithography machines. This work is highly technical and demanding because of not only the content but also the need to be able to read handwritten Japanese.

Went on-site at local law firms on numerous occasions to assist in attorney review of documents related to litigation, including patent and intellectual property cases (e.g., an intellectual property dispute about devices for burning CDs), a wrongful death lawsuit (a Japanese lighter used to light barbecues and the like resulted in the death of a child in Massachusetts, etc.), etc. Worked for several years for several agencies on litigation relating to the insurance policies (re-insurance and re-re-insurance) held by large Japanese insurance companies for the World Trade Center buildings in New York City, including the policies themselves, internal e-mails, internal reports about pursuit of litigation, etc.

Translated a reasonably large volume of general business documents, as well as more specialized financial and business documents, over the last 12.5 years. This includes investment trust prospectuses, a large project relating to the financial “big bang” (deregulation of the Japanese financial market) in the late 1990s, many annual business reports, financial statements including balance sheets, profit and loss statements, etc., profit forecasts, etc.

Translated many Excel presentations by various companies (Honda Motor Company, Asahi Glass, etc.) for presentations given in the United States about new product development.

Translated many medical records for American and Japanese patients who were treated at hospitals in Japan for submission to insurance companies in the United States.

Translated approximately 350 Family Register documents, which concurrently serve as birth certificates and certificates of marriage for Japanese nationals filing for Permanent Residence in the United States. Have also translated many hospital birth certificates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, etc.

Translated the subtitles for a large project animated film produced by Warner Brothers Japan, and later released on video in the United States.

Translated the dialogue for several Japanese video games later marketed in North America and Europe.

Translated two major projects involving traditional Japanese handicrafts and paintings, one for a museum in San Francisco and another for an exhibition held in Dublin, Ireland in the fall of 2007.

Have also done work in the field of traditional Chinese medicine and related botanical translations (extremely difficult and time-consuming).
