Position Overview

The Wildlife Trade Regulation Section is responsible for implementing Australia's obligations under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and the regulation of international trade in native species. The section also:

- fulfils Australia's obligations as the CITES Management Authority of Australia

- has primary responsibility for assessing and issuing permits for international trade in wildlife

- provides support for countries in the Oceania region to implement CITES, and

- has primary responsibility for developing policy advice related to CITES listed species and shaping Australia's engagement in international fora relevant to wildlife trade and illegal wildlife trafficking.

Major Tasks

The intern will have the opportunity to:

- assist in assessment of applications made to import or export of native and CITES listed wildlife

- provide assistance and information to Australian businesses, the Australian public and Australian Government agencies regarding Australia's trade in wildlife

- assist in the collection and analysis of wildlife trade data

Major Project for Placement

- Collect and analyse wildlife trade data to determine the high trading businesses with strong compliance history. This analysis will provide a foundation for implementing legislative and regulatory reforms for trade in protected wildlife.

Level 3, 80 Clarence Street, Sydney NSW 2000 (02) 8270 9200 www.and.org.au This work will help the student gain an understanding of Australia's trade in protected wildlife and will provide opportunities for internal and external consultation and collaboration. The Wildlife Trade Regulation team is a productive, dedicated and dynamic team with a very busy and diverse work program. The student will work closely with wildlife permits assessment officers to implement a varied work program under flexible work arrangements as necessary.

Ideal Degree/Discipline

International relations, environmental management, wildlife management, statistics and analysis.

Currently studying in their penultimate or final year of a relevant undergraduate or post-graduate degree with an Australian university Must be an Australian citizen Must be willing to undergo criminal history clearance
