Lines and Line Segments Math Grade 6 Dana Pritchett Stage 1- Desired Results Established Goals:  Students will develop their understanding of geometric figures and use this knowledge to solve authentic problems.

Understandings: Essential Questions: The students will understand the characteristics of  What are real world examples of lines and line lines and line segments and be able to identify them. segments and how are they used?  Knowledge: Skills: Students will… Students will be able to… Students will be able to successfully define, draw, and  Relate concepts and skills to practical identify different types of lines. Students will gain an applications. understanding of how lines affect the world in which  Identify and describe lines and line segments. we live.

Stage 2- Assessment Evidence Performance Tasks: Other Evidence:  Use characteristics and properties of lines and  Give examples of lines and line segments line segments to determine relationships in the classroom. between lines.  Give examples of lines and line segments in authentic usage.

Stage 3- Learning Plan Step: 1 Duration: 10 minutes Begin a class discussion to get students thinking about lines. Ask students what is a line. Ask, could we live in a world without lines? How many different types of lines are there? Can a line go on forever, if yes, what does this mean (infinite)? Ask students to tell you about different lines they see everyday. What objects do the lines form? After discussion, explain that today we will learn about lines in a mathematical perspective.

Step: 2 Duration: 15 minutes Use PowerPoint projector and slide show to explain various components of lines and definitions. After slide show, pass out a hand-out of the slide show.

Step: 3 Duration: 20 minutes Divide students into groups of 4 and assign each group a number. Essentially students use themselves to form various lines. This is usually a fun and energetic way for students to learn the different types of lines.

Step: 4 Duration: 10 minutes Once students return to their seats, distribute "dot paper" . Have students complete the worksheet. Teacher may opt to have students continue to work in groups.

Web Resources for Step 4 Title: Dot Paper and sample worksheet URL: http://mathforum.org/trscavo/geoboards/dotpaper.html Annotation: Site has geoboard dot paper for downloading. These have dots for students to use when completing worksheet. Note: students may need several sheets of paper to complete worksheet.
