Global warming report

Equipment required per student/group: Student book Access to the Internet

Getting started Your task is to work as a class to produce a TV news programme on global warming and its effects.

Investigating  The whole class will put together the TV programme.  Your teacher will divide you into small ‘news teams’ with at least one researcher and one presenter.  You will be asked to put together an item for the TV programme.  Each item will be two or three minutes long and should include some images on a computer slide presentation.

Thinking about Your ‘news team’ will be responsible for one of the following roles: 1 TV anchor This team must coordinate the report, putting the items in a logical order, and producing the introduction to define global warming. 2 Science correspondent This team will give the scientific view on the process of how global warming occurs. 3 Industrial correspondent This team will provide information about the causes of global warming, looking especially at the release of greenhouse gases. 4 Regional correspondents These four teams will each look at the affects of global warming on one of the following:  polar ice caps melting  migration of animals  reduced biodiversity  distribution of species 5 Weather correspondent The weather team will give the facts about changing weather patterns and global temperatures.

Asking questions  Use pages 222–223 of the Student book as your starting point to give the facts about your subject.  You should then find extra information on the Internet to make the report item factual and interesting.  Some images could be added to illustrate the points made.  When searching the Internet, include the term ‘global warming’ in all searches as this gives better results.  The sources you use need to be chosen carefully. Some sites may be biased so you will need to try to distinguish between fact and opinion.  In your report, it may be useful to state how reliable you feel your sources are.

Spreading the word  At the end of the lesson, the class will present the TV programme on global warming.  After you have listened to all the information, you need to summarise your findings as a class. Is global warming a problem or not?
