Families of Isabel MCKAY and Daniel OWEN plus Isabel McKAY and Bazaleel GURNEY

1. Isabel1 MCKAY , born abt 1735 of Judea, Litchfield, CT; died aft 1810 in Prob., , Oneida, NY, daughter of Elkenny MCKAY . She married (1) on 25 Jan 1756 in Washington, Litchfield, CT Daniel OWEN , born Est 1732 of New Preston, Litchfield,CT; died bef 1767; (2) abt 1767 in , , Connecticut Bazaleel GURNEY , born 28 Nov 1737 in Hartford, Hartford, CT; christened 28 Nov 1737 in Hartford, Hartford, CT; died 24 Aug 1822 in Trenton, Oneida, NY, son of John GURNEY and Sarah HUBBARD .

Notes for Isabel MCKAY BIRTH: Isabel's birth year has also been given as about 1737.

MARR: - First husband was Daniel OWEN - Early Marriages of Connecticut give her husband as David OWEN. Need to investigate further to determine which is the right one. - "History of Ancient Woodbury, Connecticut from the First Indian Deed in 1659 to 1879 including the present Towns of Washington, Southbury, Bethlehem, Roxbury, and part of Oxford and Middlebury" Volune III by William Cothren. (FHL Film #6181) - Marriages in Washington [Litchfield County, CT] page 366. David OWEN and Isabel MCCOY - 25 Jan 1756. [We believe this is a transcription error - it should be Daniel] - Second husband was Bazaleel GURNEY - A land deed in Chenango Co., NY shows the signatures of Bazaleel GURNEY and his wife Isabel who signed her mark on 7 Oct 1880, therefore this marriage would have occured before this date. (see FHL Film #818118 - Chenango County, NY Deed Book G pg 57) - I believe this marriage took place before 1790 because we have found Bazaleel GURNEY in the 1790 US Census in Montgomery Co., NY and in the 1800 US Census in Chenango Co., NY but could not find any reference to a Daniel OWEN in NY in the 1790 Census by which time Isabel and Daniel OWEN would have been married. - Information from John McKay indicates that Bazaleel GURNEY and Isabel McKAY had a son Nathan GURNEY born 25 Sep 1768. This suggests that they were married in about 1767. We have changed the marriage date to reflect that suggestion. - Blanche McKay gives the following regarding Isabel McKAY and her family: "No records were found of ...Isabel's second marriage to Bazaleel GURNEY. There are records in Kent on property owned by Bazaleel. Daniel OWEN, her first husband, died sometime between 1761-1767. Isabel had married Bazalell, and the had a son, Nathan GURNEY, born 25 Sep 1768 in Hartford, CT. In 1769, Daniel OWEN, Jr. appeared as a minor in Probate Court with a James Terrell to administrate the estate of his father, Daniel OWEN, deceased, and who had died intestate. His relict (wife) had declined to take over the administration of the estate. Isabel's son Phineas OWEN, married Rachel SMITH in Ltichfield, CT on 24 Mar 1784. Nathan GURNEY, Isabel and Bazaleel's son, married Polly SEYMOUR in New Hartford 12 Feb 1789. Bazzleel GURNEY and Daniel OWEN were both Revolutionary War soldiers and received pensions per the Act of 1818. They were residing in Onieda County, NY at that time. Isabel died sometime after 1810, as she is mentioned in a deed recorded that year."

LAND: We have found and noted on the record for Daniel OWEN several land transactions that took place in Kent, Litchfield, CT. However, they cover a time span of 1748-1799 and some are probably not for the Daniel OWEN that was Isabel's husband. Never the less we have listed all of them on his record and we will need to sort them out as part of a future research project.

NOTE: - Isabel and her son Phineas OWEN were mentioned as having been among the survivors of the Battle of Wyoming described on her brother Alexander McKAY'S record. This then would locate Isabel and some of her family at present day Wilkes-Barre, PA in about 1778. See story in the book "Genealogy of the McKay Family" by Dr. James Adolphus McKay (FHL Book 929.273 A1 #2884) - Information from John Phillip McKay, Jr. told me that Isabel McKAY and Bazalel GURNEY has a son Nathan GURNEY born 25 Sep 1786. - We found the same information in the International Genealogical Index, and some reference in the Pedigree Resource file as well.

MARRIAGE: MARRIAGE: "Early Connecticut Marriages as found on Ancient Church Records Prior to 1800", edited by Frederick W. Bailey. Page 96 - Washington, Litchfield, CT - First Congregational Church David OWEN of New Preston & Isabel Macay of Judea, 25 Jan 1756.

Notes for Daniel OWEN DEATH: Daniel's wife Isabel McKAY signs a deed as the wife of Bazaleel GURNEY on 7 Oct 1800 in Chenango County, NY (see Deed Book G pg 57 - FHL Film #818118) - I believe that Daniel died before 1790. We do not find a reference in NY in the 1790 US Census that should be Daniel OWEN but we do find references to her second Husband Bazaleel GURNEY in Montgomery County. - Information from John McKay indicates that Isabel McKAY and Bazaleel GURNEY had their first child Nathan GURNEY on 25 Sep 1768. This suggests that Isabel, Daniel OWEN widow, remarried in about 1767 and that Daniel died sometime before 1767.

PROBATE: CT Probate Court Records 1719-1916 includes Woodbury, Bethlehem, and Southbury - Page 120. (FHL Film #6173) 7 Mar 1769 - A Daniel OWEN and a James TERRILL both of New Milford, CT are appointed administrators for the estate of Daniel OWEN, late of New Milford who died intestate. The widow and relict of Daniel declined the opportunity to be the administrator. We have not yet determined if this Daniel OWEN is our Daniel or if it is his father. This estate needs further study by us.

LAND: The following deeds all relate to land transactions in Kent, Litchfield, CT over the time span 1748-1799. We are certain that not all of them apply to this Daniel OWEN but we have listed them here for the present until we have time to sort them out as part of a future research effort. The deeds are as follow: 20 Feb 1748 of Easton, Bristol, MA buys 100 acres Kent 3rd division 4 Jan 1747 of Easton, Bristol, MA sells 50 acres Kent 3rd division 25 Oct 1773 of New Milford, Litchfield, CT buys land in Kent 4 Nov 1773 of New Milford, Litchfield, CT buys land in Kent 12 Mar 1774 of Kent, Litchfield, CT sells land in Kent 1781 of New Milford, Litchfield, CT buys 3/4 acre in Kent 26 Dec 1797 of Kent Litchfield, CT buys 1/3 part of saw mill 22 Jan 1799 of Kent Litchfield, CT sells 1/3 part of saw mill [Researcher note - this looks like 3 generations of Daniel's.]

Notes for Bazaleel GURNEY BIRTH: 1988 edition of the International Genealogy Index gives the birth reference for Bazaleel as it was extracted from CT Vital Records. - the book "The Gurney Family from Abner to Zuinglius A Genealogical Dictionary - Some descendants of Richard Gurney who settled at Weymouth, MA before 1656" by Jean Gurney RIGLER also gives the same birth date for Bazaleel but does not identify his spouse or his children, except one who is Nathan GURNEY who was born 25 Sep 1768 in Hartford, Hartford, CT and died in 1856 in Genesco, IL. The article does give several more generation of this GURNEY Line. (FHL Book 929.273 G966r).

CHRISTENING: "Families of Early Hartford, Connecticut" by Lucius Barnes Barbour Reprinted in 1977 by Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc in Baltimore, MD. (FHL Film #1421857) Page 288 - John GURENY and family.

MARR: A Chenango County, NY Land Deed dated 7 Oct 1800 has the signature of Bazaleel GURNEY and the mark of his wife Isabel, this suggests an earlier marriage.

DEATH: John Phillip McKay, Jr. gives Bazaleel GURNEY's death as 24 Aug 1822 in Trenton, Oneida, NY.

NOTES: - see note under Birth regarding one known child of Bazaleel. - Correspondence from Blanche A. McKay (wife of Harry McKay) indicates that, "Bazaleel GURNEY was from Hartford, CT. After the Wyoming Massacre he served as a soldier. The family lived finally in Oneida County, NY. Isabel died sometime after 1810. Her name is last on a land transaction then."

SPECULATION: I believe that Daniel OWEN the first husband of Isabel McKAY died before 1790 and that Bazaleel became her second husband before 1790. Later we see both Nathan GURNEY living next to Bazaleel GURNEY but also Phineas OWEN who was Isabel's son by her first husband. Also there are some Daniel OWEN deeds in the same time period but I believe they are for another son named Daniel OWEN, Jr as he is referred to in some of the deeds. Research did not find Probate Records for Bazaleel or his wife Isabel in Chenango. Bazaleel sold his land in 1800 and we see Nathan GURNEY selling several tracts in 1802 indicating that he is of Paris, Oneida, NY. I believe the GURNEY family moved to Oneida county and that we will find their deaths there but I have not been able pursue the Oneida County Records at this time. We will need to do so in a future project.

CENSUS: 1790 US Census - Bazaleel GURNEY was in Montgomery County, NY

CENSUS: 1800 US Census - Bazaleel GURNEY was in Sangersfield, Chenango County, NY also found next door to Bazaleel was Phineas Owen his step-son and Nathan GURNEY his son.

Notes: NOTE: - Informaton on Nathan GURNEY came from John McKay. Married Mary or Mollie SEYMOUR in abt. 1789. - Blanche McKay gives the following about Nathan GURNEY "...Nathan GURNEY, Isabel and Bazaleel's son, married Polly SEYMOUR in New Hartford 12 Feb 1789." [This localtiy is a problem. There is a New Hartford in both Litchfield County, CT and Oneida County, NY. This family started in Litchfield County, CT and ended up in Oneida County, NY.] [Based on the fact that Blanche McKay had a full marriage date we also used the name she had for Nathan's wife.] Generation 2
