Polimeks Construction, one of Turkey’s biggest contractors, won the tender for the construction of Ashgabat International Airport. The largest project ever to be undertaken by a Turkish contractor abroad, the Ashgabat International Airport construction project is valued at 2 billion 253 million dollars. The construction of the new airport, whose design was inspired by the national symbols and values of Turkmenistan, begins in January 2013 and is planned to be completed in 2016. The new airport, built on an enclosed area of 350,000 m2, will receive 14 million passengers per year.
Polimeks chairman Erol Tabanca stated that, upon completion, the Ashgabat International Airport would be an important airport not just in Turkmenistan but on an international level. He added that Polimeks was proud to of winning this tender and of taking on the responsibility for one of the biggest investments of the Turkmen state. Tabanca said “We would like to offer our thanks to the President of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov for his belief and faith in us, and to the Turkish authorities who have ensured the continuation of positive trade relations between the two countries.” Tabanca highlighted the fact that Polimeks has carried out many projects in Turkmenistan over the last 17 years, adding:
“The construction of Ashgabat International Airport will begin in January 2013 and is planned to be completed in 2016. The value of our new project is 2 billion 253 million dollars. Since our company’s foundation until today, we have put our name to 120 projects. This project will be the second airport we have constructed in Turkmenistan. The project design, also carried out by Polimeks, was inspired by Oğuz Khan, an important figure in Turkmen history, and by the falcon, also an important symbol in Turkmen culture.
We are currently continuing with the construction of the 3.69 million dollar Ashgabat Olympic Complex, the Ashgabat Technology Centre and the Awaza Congress Centre. We are very proud and happy to provide such a service to Turkmenistan and as such to open this window of opportunity for employment for our country. Within this project we aim to provide employment for around 20 thousand people.” In 2012, Polimeks was ranked at number 56 on the “Top 225 International Contractors” list, published by the international Engineering News Record (EMR), the most prestigious publication of the construction sector, and was the first among Turkish companies on this list
