Teacher: Mary Kate Bueltmann Room #:101 Lesson # in unit: Topic: Romeo and Juliet (ECA Framing LP) Lesson Objective and Assessment of the objective

Students will be able to:

- Express themselves clearly, concisely in a group presentation

- Identify themes and connect them to quotes from Romeo & Juliet

-Relate the themes in Romeo & Juliet to their everyday lives.

Supporting Diverse Learners

-This is a group project that allows every level of student to contribute. I will not know how much each student does, so struggling students can do as little or as much as they can without consequence. The only thing required of students is an individual story relating to the theme, but students may read this off of a sheet of paper or a visual aid (prezi, powerpoint, poster, etc).

Lesson Agenda

Warm up: How will you support students in accessing prior knowledge, personal, real world and/or cultural connections?

At the beginning of the unit, students are assigned to a group and given a theme. The students are handpicked so that each group has a mix of levels. This way each group has more advanced students that can scaffold any stragglers. Students are given a worksheet that has room for them to write quotes on. They are encouraged to take note of any quote they see that relates to the theme. I will be periodically checking to make sure students have quotes and each group will have a mandatory meeting with me before they present their material. This way I can make sure each student is formatively assessed before his/her summative assessment. We will also briefly go over the each of the themes before students begin reading the play. Transitioning and Stating Objectives: Throughout the unit students will be searching for their theme. By limiting their focus, it allows them to look deeper into one part of the text. Since each group has a different theme, eventually all the students will get all the information via student presentations. The presentations will presents quotes, explain what they mean, identify who said it, and relate the quotes back to the theme. Students will also have to make a claim about the theme in their presentation and relate the theme to real life. This will help students with essay writing, comprehension, and it will show up on the ECA. I will tell students that they will need to discuss each of the themes in their ECA, which hopefully will motivate them to listen to their peers’ presentations. I will also have peer review sheets that will require students to write about each theme after the presentation.

Transition to Instruction : What support strategies will you use to scaffold students learning so they meet or exceed targeted? Transition Guided Practice: This activity will guide students to be able to talk about the themes in the book based on a quote. The ECA consists of a bunch of quotes that students must identify the speaker, theme, and say something intelligent about. By doing this in reverse, they are practicing for the test in more creative and exciting way. Also, by teaching the material to the rest of the students, the presenters are gaining a very deep knowledge of that theme. So, if nothing else, the students will at least nail one theme on the test.

Transition to Wrap up/Closing: How will you engage students in self-assessment and/or reflection on key concepts? Transition to Independent Practice and Conferencing: On the day of presentations, students will have to listen to their peers’ presentation and fill out an evaluation form. This will ensure that students are paying attention and remaining focused during their peers’ presentations.

Reflection: Romeo & Juliet Theme Presentations!

Each group has been assigned one of the themes from Romeo & Juliet. Your task is to create an interesting presentation that explains your theme using quotations you will gather from the play throughout the unit.

Presentations must include:

 5 quotations that depict your theme in the play

 Rationale for why those quotes depict your theme (one rationale for each quote)

 1 overall claim about your theme

 5 connections (one from each group member) of your theme to your life

There will be a rubric passed out closer to presentation time. For now, focus on gathering quotes while we read the play. If a quote seems relevant to you, HIGHLIGHT IT. You will receive a quote sheet in addition to this assignment sheet, WHICH I WILL BE CHECKING PERIODICALLY FOR A

GRADE (see the syllabus for specific dates).

Each group MUST meet with me at least once before presenting!! Name: Peer Evaluations

By evaluating your peers’ work, I will be able to tell 1. That they clearly explained the material to you and 2. That you understand the material. Answer wisely, young ones.

1. What is the theme being presented?

2. What is the claim made in this presentation? Do you agree with it? Why or why not?

3. What is one quote (or event) from Romeo & Juliet that relates to this theme?

4. Relay one of the stories your comrades told here. Quote Sheet Theme:
