COURSE DESCRIPTION There will be an emphasis in this course on using algebra concepts to solve problems. Algebra is essential to provide a foundation for success in future mathematics and science courses. Also, the problem-solving skills you learn in this algebra course will be valuable in your future occupations. RESOURCES If you need help, ask me for a pass to see me during period 9. Be sure to come for extra help if you have questions or need assistance with your work. It is very important that you keep up with assignments because mathematics is cumulative - each concept builds on what has just been learned. Also, remember to check my website daily. GRADING METHOD Grading will be on the point system. The final grade will be calculated as: # points earned/ total possible points X 100. The following will be the components of your quarter grade: Tests/Quizzes * Tests may include the types of questions seen on PSSAs and material from previous chapters * Work must be shown. NO WORK NO CREDIT! * Quizzes/Worksheets/Assignments * Short in-class quizzes may or may not be announced Homework/Classroom participation There will be a Problem of the Day that is collected and graded * Homework is not graded, however, there will be homework quizzes that will count as a quiz grade * There will be graded notebook checks Project * There will be a graded project each semester ABSENCE IS NOT AN EXCUSE! If you are absent, you are responsible to get all assignments, complete them and obtain distributed handouts. When you know you will be away (e.g. vacations, field trips), you are expected to obtain assignments prior to departure & complete these prior to returning to class. If you are absent for the review the day before a test, you are expected to be ready for the test. If you miss a test or quiz, you are responsible to arrange to see me within 2 days to arrange a schedule to make up the test/quiz. Assignments & selected course materials will be posted on my website calendar (see web address above). Classroom Rules: 1. Class starts when the bell rings. Be in your seat, ready to start class work when the bell rings. 2. Bring your binder with dividers, textbook, calculator and pencil to class every day. 3. Respect other students, teachers, and school property. 4. You are here to learn. Requests to go to your lockers, use the rest rooms, go to guidance, visit the nurse etc…. will not be allowed except under emergency conditions or if you have a pass. 5. NO CELL PHONES – If a cell phone is seen or heard, it will be confiscated per school district policy. 6. No food/drinks in the classroom.
