Program Description Comedian David Sedaris will be performing at the Pantages Theatre in Tacoma on Tuesday, October 28, 2003. Dr. Doe has talked about Sedaris’ humor several times during my contemporary American literature class and is a big fan. In class last week, Dr. Doe used a recording of Sedaris to illustrate a point in a discussion.

When I learned that the comedian would be in Tacoma, I felt that it would be a good opportunity to apply for a Faculty to Resident Connections Grant. Dr. Doe is available that evening, and 10 of my residents are interested and available to attend the show. The show begins at 7:30 pm. We will be meeting at 6:00 pm, carpooling to the Tacoma Dome Parking Garage, and taking the Tacoma Link Rail up to the Pantages.

After the show, we will stop for coffee at the Starbucks on Pacific Avenue by the University of Washington, Tacoma. I have asked Dr. Doe to lead a short discussion on the commentary offered by Sedaris in his act.

My residents are excited about being able to “hang out” with a faculty member. Only one of them has taken a class from Dr. Doe, so this will provide them with an opportunity to get to know him. Beyond the social aspects of this program, I believe that the discussion after the show will allow my residents to learn some skills for life long learning. Many of my residents are self admittedly not aware of things that are going on in the world. Dr. Doe has been great at helping me realize how much I do know and how to formulate a personal opinion on different current event subjects. I think that the comedy show will provide my residents with a springboard into a good discussion about our society and why the things Sedaris uses in his act are funny to us.
