2017 CHILEAN NELSON MANDELA SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME

The People’s Republic of Chile is offering a fully funded post-graduate scholarship in Masters studies at ten accredited Chilean universities to professionals who are South African nationals. The Nelson Mandela Scholarship is offered by the Government of Chile through the International Cooperation Agency of Chile “Agencia de Cooperacion Internacional (AGCI)” to address areas identified as scarce and critical in the forestry and fisheries sectors. The successful applicants are required to complete a compulsory Spanish course in Chile for six months before they can start with the Master’s degree.

The department would like to invite eligible applicants who wish to further their studies and pursue careers in the identified scarce skills to apply for the Masters level-study offered by the Chilean Nelson Mandela Scholarship Programme.

1. Eligibility criteria

 South African citizen;  Academic excellence;  Applicants should meet the entry requirements and acceptance to the university at which they propose to pursue their studies in the People’s Republic of Chile;  Qualifying applicants should be in the agriculture, forestry and fisheries sectors;  The individuals should meet the requirements of the specified scarce skills and of entry as specified by the selected universities in the People’s Republic of Chile.

Preference will be given to applicants with requisite credentials from previously disadvantaged communities.

2. Admission requirements

 Interested parties are advised to arrange for admission in the respective study program at the university or other institution of Chilean higher education of their choice;  Applicants must receive unconditional acceptance in order to start their application process;  Scholarship application form to AGCI, duly completed and signed, as indicated in Annex 4.  Final acceptance letter of the study program chosen, should demonstrate unconditional acceptance of the applicants, the starting date of classes and the duration of the program of study, including the thesis and degree examination;  Compatible health certificate issued and signed by a licensed doctor should be attached as Annex 6 (Recommendation of health declaration);  Certified copies of qualifications;  Certified copies of transcripts (most recent);  Curriculum Vitae, with emphasis on both work and academic history;  Brief description of the applicant’s reasons to study in Chile, the objectives of the studies desired and how the applicant intends to implement them back home;  Typed research proposal in English (not less than 800 words, Font: Arial 12);  Academic reference letter;  A recommendation letter granting permission from the employing institution, which clearly specifies their interest in having their employee or official conducting studies in Chile and the indication that the person actually has permission to be absent during the duration of the scholarship and if they will keep their position back home or not;  Affidavit must be filled by the selected candidates in accordance with Annex 5;  Students who do not speak Spanish will first attend an Immersion course for 4-6 months prior to resuming with their Masters programme.

4. The scholarship will cover the following:  Spanish Immersion course  Tuition  Monthly allowance  Sickness and accident insurance  Prescribed books  Accommodation  Graduation costs  Meals  Return economy air ticket to the People’s Republic of Chile

5. Application process

i. Closing date for applications for the scholarship is 29 September 2017.

ii. The documentation mentioned above should be submitted to Directorate: Sector Education and Training AFTER admission is granted at one of the universities. .

iii. A fully completed application form with certified copies of supporting documents should be forwarded to the following address:
