Name ______RESEARCH OUTLINE Directions: Use the outline below to start organizing your research. Remember that this will be a crafted speech and the focus is more on the analysis/discussion than the data. With this in mind, also start jotting down style devices you may employ and your ideas on what you might say about the data in the paper. **Remember to include internal/parenthetical citations for any data you use in your outline**

I am writing the (circle one) CONSTRUCTIVE REFUTATION/REBUTTAL

INTRODUCTION (HOOK YOUR AUDIENCE!!! Captures attention of your audience and gets them on your side about a general principle – this should help introduce your major premise)

STATEMENT OF BACKGROUND (narrates with evidence the key facts and/or events of your topic – don’t forget internal citations)

Constructive this section will contain more general information to set the stage and build a foundation. Rebuttal this section will contain less background than your partner’s – the background included can be more specific **Be sure the information you use builds off of your partner and doesn’t become repetitive

Affirmative this is where you want to start setting up your SITHS, especially the significance and harms. Negation this is where you want to down play the significance and harms and/or show advantages that outweigh harms. PROPOSITION (State your syllogism) *When you actually write your paper your syllogism can be written in the if, if, then (like your original argument plan) or it can be intertwined with the background information.

PROOF (here list the data you might use to support your argument – don’t forget your SITHS)

*Remember you will focus more on the warrants (analysis and explanation of HOW the data proves your argument)

Constructive this section will contain more data (3-5 pieces of data) Rebuttal this section will contain less data (2-3 pieces of data) *Be sure you check with your partner so you do not use the same data

Possible Data (with internal citation) Possible Warrant

REFUTE (anticipate OPPOSING VIEWS and refute with evidence – explain why YOUR approach is better)

Constructive this section will contain less points (2-3 things an opponent might say) Rebuttal this section will contain more points (3-5 things an opponent might say) *Be sure you check with your partner so you are not both using the same data

What my OPPONENTs believe: Evidence to REFUTE:

CONCLUSION (reminds audience of your stance and leaves them contemplating the importance of this issue/topic in their lives- LEAVE THEM WITH A LASTING IMPRESSION!!!)

How will you appeal to your audience’s feelings/emotions and leave them with a powerful lasting impression? Think back to your value/hook in your introduction – can you remind your audience of it to bring your argument full circle? CALL TO ACTION What is your overall message? What do you want your audience “to do” or change? (remember this needs to be plausible)
