All - Mid State Honor Band/Orchestra Auditions Audition Guide

Mid State honor groups are:

 Two 7th-8th grade concert bands (Gold; Silver)  One 7th-8th grade jazz band  One 7th -8th grade orchestra  Two 9th-10th grade concert bands (Gold; Silver)  One 9th-10th grade orchestra (STRINGS ONLY)  Two 11th-12th grade concert bands (Gold; Silver)  One 11th-12th grade full orchestra  Two 9th-12th grade jazz bands (Gold; Silver)

Audition dates for MTSBOA auditions are:

 11th-12th Band & Orchestra Auditions are usually around the 3rd Saturday of November  9th-10th Band & Orchestra Auditions are usually around the 2nd Saturday of December  9th-12th grade Jazz Auditions are also usually around the 2nd Saturday of December

Students that are selected to participate will perform in their honor group on the dates listed below from Thursday afternoon through Saturday evening. As a school-supported event, students will not be counted absent from school to participate.

Auditions are held at schools in the Nashville area

Rehearsal/Performance Dates for MTSBOA Honor Bands are:

 7th-12th Grade Mid State Honor Bands are usually the first full weekend of January  7th-12th Grade Mid State Orchestras & Jazz Bands are usually the 2nd weekend of January  Rehearsals & performances are in Murfreesboro

Students that rank high enough in their sections may be eligible to participate in the Tennessee Music Educators Association (TMEA) All State Convention held in April.

All band/orchestra auditions will be in this order: Prepared music, then scales, then sight-reading.

1. Prepared Music: All prepared music excerpts have been available for all students since September.

AUDITION BARRIER: All grade levels must demonstrate that appropriate attention has been given to perform the prepared music at a competent level. Judges have the authority to end an audition during the prepared performance if adequate practice has apparently not occurred for this area.

Percussion Clarification: Due to the new ‘Prepared Barrier’ percussionists will not be allowed to sight-read or perform fundamentals in the room (instrument) where they failed the prepared barrier, but are allowed to proceed to the next room for remaining instrument areas. Percussionist will audition in 3 rooms: snare room, mallet room, tympani room.

2. Scales & Rudiment Requirements: Each instrument has a required range for chromatic and number of major scales to prepare for the auditions. See Mr. or Mrs. Medford for the scales sheet that defines the minimum requirements.  9th-10th Percussion will be asked 2 of 26 standard rudiments and buzz roll  11th-12th Percussion will be asked 2 or 3 of 40 standard rudiments and buzz roll

3. Sight reading Guidelines: All sight reading is generated from www.sightreadingfactory.com. You may practice from this website using the free demo version or full paid subscription. From 6 levels of difficulty and the boundaries from the scales sheets, the following levels will be utilized for the sight readings for these grades:  7th-8th Grade: Level 2, Level 3, Level 4  9th-10th Grade: Level 3, Level 4, Level 5  11th- 12th Grade: Level 4, Level 5, Level 6

Each instrument (except drums) will perform two (2) prepared pieces plus sight reading plus improv. See Mr. Medford or Mrs. Medford for the prepared music excerpts. *BASS TROMBONE: Will perform the Bass Trombone excerpt PLUS the two (2) trombone pieces plus sight-reading plus improv. IMPROV: F Blues (from Aebersold Vol. 42 "Blues in All Keys" - track 8). Each student will listen to one (1) chorus and play for two (2) choruses. (It is the student's responsibility to know what a "chorus" is and how many measures.) *Note: Students should purchase this recording for individual practice. Recordings for Improv will be provided in each audition room on the day of the audition. DRUMSET: Will perform two (2) prepared pieces, plus sight-reading, plus styles (in place of improv). The styles are to be performed as followed: *8 bars of swing @ 220 *8 bars of funk/rock @ 100 *8 bars of samba @120 AUX. PERCUSSION: Involves Vibes and Congas. Students will perform two (2) prepared pieces on Vibes as well as one (1) prepared piece on Congas/Timbales. Each student will sight-read on Vibes and Congas. Improv will take place on Vibes.
