Dear Third Grade Families,

Thank you so much to all who donated supplies and/or their time to our McKenna Sandwiches day last week! Our class made 263 sandwiches. What a team!

In Language Arts, students will be starting biography projects, for which they will choose a person of interest to study and give presentations to the class. Enclosed in the Tuesday folder this week please find a timeline for the project, with your child’s chosen person of interest, as well as a layout of expectations for the poster (see an example poster at right). Please sign and return the timeline – we will give it back to you to keep at home! Third graders will also be practicing the cursive letter h. This week the spelling pattern is three-letter clusters (str, scr, spr, thr).

In Math, third graders have their test on Topic 2 this Thursday. Students have been reviewing the three properties of addition, mental math, rounding, estimating sums and differences, and finding unknown values. A study guide was included in the Tuesday folder last week. Math homework this week will be review worksheets. We highly encourage students to use the notes in their math journals to help them study.

In Religion, students will have a test this Friday. Their study guides are due to Ms. Bridgeland’s box on Wednesday. Students will receive an answer key to the study guide on Wednesday.

In Social Studies, students have been learning about cardinal and intermediate directions. This week, we will be delving further into maps, discussing map scales and map keys.

GRACE Art is scheduled to begin this Friday! We are still looking for a parent to coordinate this first one. If you would like to volunteer, please email Tamra Moore at [email protected]. This is a great opportunity to spend quality time with the class!

(see back) Halloween Our annual Halloween parade will take place on Tuesday, October 31st beginning in the court yard at 1:30. Students should bring their costumes to school as they will change into them starting at 1:00. Thank you to room parents for organizing and hosting the Halloween celebration; we are all looking forward to it! A few Halloween reminders:  If your child wishes to change into a costume for the parade, please send the costume in a separate bag making sure your child’s initials are marked somewhere on the various parts of the costume  Parents are welcome to watch the parade, follow along, and take pictures  HTS Guidelines for Halloween Costumes: No weapons, elaborate accessories, high heels, spaghetti straps, bare midriffs, or gory masks (all masks must be easy to see through). Costumes should be kept simple; please make sure your child's costume is appropriate.
