Cosmetology This Trimester Will Include Outcomes from the Following Units of Study

Welcome to Cosmetology elective for the first trimester! This elective will provide you with opportunities to explore personal grooming such as hairstyles, facials and manicures. In this elective you will get the chance to experiment with different hairstyles, learn salon practices, do other student’s hair, and perform facials and complete manicures. This class will challenge you as you learn practices of a salon and how to interact with clients while performing salon services. Most importantly the goal of this elective is for you to have fun!

Cosmetology this trimester will include outcomes from the following units of study:

-Safety: Working in a salon and with clients has individuals being exposed to a variety of different tools and instruments. It is essential that students practice safe and clean hygienic practices.

-Personal Grooming: We will explore how personal grooming differs based on gender and cultures. We will also examine personal hygiene components of grooming such as skin, hair, face, hand and nail care.

-Tools: We will examine the different tools that can be found in a salon and when to use them.

-Hair styling and braiding: You will learn how to style hair in a variety of different ways and using a variety of different tools. You will also learn a few different braiding techniques and will have opportunities to practice these.

-Facials: We will analyze face shapes, complexions and skin types. You will have the opportunity to make a facial mask based on the skin type of your client.

-Manicures: You will learn the basics of a manicure and will practice giving manicures to clients.

-Tattoos: We will work on applying rhinestone applique to the hands and arms and if there is time we will also work on henna tattoos.

-Sewing: If time permits students, those students who are interested in sewing may also learn how to complete very basic sewing projects, such as sewing on a button. Other students would have the opportunity to complete an enrichment project related to Cosmetology at the time.

-Students will write one quiz in Cosmetology this trimester. A mark of 80% or higher must be achieved on the quiz in order for the student to move on to the practical tasks.

Supplies Needed

Students are asked to bring the following to class:

 Pencil or Pen  School Agenda

 Small binder or duotang for handouts

 Own hairbrush and comb

 Hair straightener (if student has one at home, please do NOT purchase one for the class if you do not have one)

Classroom Expectations

1) When instructor asks for the attention of the class, everyone is expected to stop their task and talking in order to listen.

2) No purses, backpacks, hats, gum, food or drinks.

3) Come to class prepared and ready to work and participate. Bring agenda, pencil etc.

4) Be accepting and non-judgmental of all other students in the class.

5) Be a collaborating and respectful member of the group and class.

6) No rough-housing or horse play in order to maintain the safety of the class and all students.

7) Be an active participant in all class activities.

Evaluation

Daily marks will be awarded based on positive 70% participation of the student. This entails positive attitudes, adherence to behaviour expectations, and completing tasks assigned.

Quiz 10%

Project 10%

Assignments 10% Total: 100%

The above will translate into a letter grade on the report card- Excellent-Proficient-Acceptable- Needs Improvement

Note: You will receive a mark out of 5 for participation, involvement and attitude/ cooperation daily. These marks will be used to decide on the letter grade given to the student. In other words, if you have a positive attitude, participate in class, and are safe in your practices you will be very successful in Cosmetology this trimester… plus you will also learn a few things too!
