You will notice that some words in the graphics are interchangeable. For example, time-based and time- bound are both used and attainable and achievable are both used. This is fine as they essentially mean the same thing. Choose the language that is easiest for you to remember and you feel most comfortable with. If you would like to read more on setting SMART goals, here is a video link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1-SvuFIQjK8 A simple google search will also bring you a plethora of information on this topic.
______
Part 1: ULTIMATE GOALS
Setting goals and outcomes for yourself as a student athlete is a critical element in the process of taking your academic and athletic careers to the college or university level.
When you identify what you are striving for you are far more likely to achieve your dreams of playing at the highest level possible. You have to know what you want before you design a plan to get there.
This assignment is about finding out what you want as a student, athlete and human being. It is about setting goals, outcomes and results. Once you know what you want (your goals, outcomes and results) you can design a plan for how to get there.
Setting your goals is about stretching yourself, challenging yourself to become the best student athlete you can possibly be. Goals are about your dreams and ambitions. This assignment is about stretching yourself and striving to attain your ultimate dreams or goals. Ultimate means: best, greatest, biggest, supreme…so DREAM BIG! Go for it! Don’t hold anything back! If you want to play for the Canadian National team or go professional with your sport, write it down. If you want to win a gold medal in the Olympics, write it down. Be playful! Have fun!
Recruiters from colleges and universities are looking for student athletes who are: Great Athletes Great Students Great People
You will find three questions pertaining to you as an athlete, student and person. Give serious thought to who and what you want to become as a student, athlete and person. These are your goals, your outcomes, your dreams.
The more detail you add to your answers, the better. Be as specific as possible. Add details such as what team you are going to play for, your uniform number, what year you are going to be drafted, what university or college you are going to go to, what percentage of scholarship you are going to get, what you will study, will you be the captain of the team?, etc. What are your ULTIMATE GOALS and dreams as an athlete? List 10-15 goals. Be specific and detailed.
What are your ULTIMATE GOALS as a student? (What will you study at university? Where? How much scholarship money? What job will you aim for?) List 10-15 goals. What are your ULTIMATE GOALS as a human being? What kind of person do you want to become? What characteristics or traits will you exhibit? List 10-15 goals.
______
Part 2: REASONS WHY & MOTIVATION
Have you ever thought about WHY you want to achieve the ULTIMATE GOALS you have just listed in Part 1?
It is one thing to know what you want, but it a totally different thing to know WHY you want it. Knowing WHY you want to achieve something adds the juice, the motivation, the excitement and passion to your goals. You must get emotionally connected to your goals!
Your ULTIMATE GOALS are lofty goals, as they should be. Your ULTIMATE GOALS are your dreams. In order to achieve those goals you need to be extremely motivated and persistent. Achieving your ULTIMATE GOALS will require that you overcome fears of failure and work harder than ever before. Working hard to achieve your ULTIMATE GOALS is one of the most fulfilling things you will ever do in your life.
The fact is though…you will only work hard enough if you have powerful reasons to fire you up to achieve your goals. These reasons are your WHY’S! The more reasons WHY you want to achieve your goals, the more motivated and persistent you will be in achieving them. Your WHY’s will get you through the tough times and catapult you to heights that you will be extremely proud of for the rest of your life.
Think of your REASONS WHY as logs you put on a fire. Every time you add a log to the fire, the fire burns bigger and hotter!
In figuring out your REASONS WHY think about how you will feel when you achieve your Ultimate Goals. These are called INTRINSIC MOTIVATORS. Will you be happy? Proud? Fulfilled? Think about how others would feel when you achieve your Ultimate Goals. Would your parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, neighbours, teachers be happy and proud of you? How would it feel to go to your old school and do a motivational speech to encourage young athletes to follow their dreams?
Words have meaning, so use powerful words to describe your REASONS WHY. Will you be happy or ecstatic? Will you be proud or unbelievably proud? Describe in detail how you and others will feel when you achieve your ULTIMATE GOALS.
There are also EXTRINSIC MOTIVATORS why you want to achieve your ULTIMATE GOALS. Make sure to list in detail motivators such as buying new cars (What kind and model of car? What colour? Etc.), being sponsored by NIKE, UNDERARMOUR OR ADIDAS, never having to work at a ‘real job’, saying thanks to your parents by buying them a new house or car, donating money to your community to build a new facility etc.
Next, your job will be to better understand intrinsic and extrinsic motivation so you can better understand yourself. Choose ONE of the following articles to read and summarize. You summary is to a solid paragraph in length (9-12 sentences) and reflect the ‘who, what, when, where, why and how’ of the article as well as any other interesting information. You will need to reference the article in APA format at the beginning of your summary. If you are unsure how to do this, use this useful link to guide you through the process: http://www.citationmachine.net/
Here are the articles to choose from:

Summary REASONS WHY I want to achieve my ULTIMATE GOALS. List at least 25 REASONS WHY you want to achieve your ULTIMATE GOALS. Provide details for each reason. Get your parents, relatives and friends to help you with your list if you want.
Examples: I would be extremely proud of my accomplishments and I would never have to regret that I didn’t “go for it” when I had the chance. I could buy a candy apple red Mustang GT Saline Edition for my Mom I could save my parents a lot of money if I get a scholarship Saving my parents money would allow them to pay off their mortgage. I could donate money to the Heart and Stroke Foundation to help save lives. I would have the coolest new shoes. My grandparents would be exceptionally proud of me. I’d love to show some negative people that I succeeded when they think I couldn’t.
With all this goal setting and discovering your intrinsic and extrinsic motivators…you might have a giant headache but you also might feel very inspired to achieve your goal and your best life. Please submit this assignment to become registered in the course. I am excited to work with you to plan and achieve all your dreams.
