Content In order to fulfil legal demands a digital tachograph will be introduced for all vehicles greater than 3.5 tonnes registered from 5th August 2005 in EC- and EFTA-countries (later introduction for Switzerland). The Analogue tachograph will still be offered for vehicles registered before 2005-08-05.

Type Approval of recording equipment and tachograph cards as components, the installation and calibration of recording equipment will be made according to: Regulation (EC) No. 3821/85 as last amended by 2135/98 and 1360/2002 (Annex 1B).

Note! The calibration will be made by an authorised Volvo workshop since the Vehicle Registration Numbers (VRN) is not available at Production Plants. The Production Plants will take care of installation and activation.

The new digital tachograph vehicle unit includes a processor, a data memory, a real time clock, two smart card interfaces, a printer, a display, a visual warning, a calibration/downloading connector, connectors for the vehicle interface and facilities for entry of users input. Via the printer both the driver and the authorities can make print outs from the tachograph. Fleet owners have the responsibility to store the digital information, sampled by the tachograph, according to the EC legislation.

The tachograph will fit in an ISO 7736 format radio slot. The dimensions are similar to but not identical with the mechanical tachograph installed today.

The same connectors and pin out as in today’s tachograph will be used.

Content Functions

Speed / Distance

A motion sensor is attached to a tooth wheel in the transmission. It works down to zero speed. Based on the speed signal input the tachograph computes the speed and distance. The speed data for the latest 24 hours is stored in the unit’s mass memory. The speed accuracy is 1.5 km/h, with a theoretical perfect input signal. The legal requirement is 6 km/h. Distance data is accumulated up to 9,999,999.9 km; accuracy is 1% of the nominal value (above 1 km).

Time / Date

The tachograph has a real time clock with battery backup, minimum operating time without external power supply is one year. Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) is used. Accuracy, 2 sec/24h in the temperature range –20C - +70C. The driver can adjust the Coordinated Universal Time maximum one minute per seven-day period. The displayed date and time is the local time of the country where the vehicle is registered. The driver can set the local time by changing the offset from the UTC value, in half-hour steps.

Driver Activity Function

The different driver and (co-driver) activities are monitored, stored in the mass memory and transmitted on the CAN link and also via pin D8 FMS Data link output. The table below details the different activity categories and also which category that automatically will be selected when driving and when stopped, respectively (in bold letters), as well as the manually selectable ones.

DRIVING WORK AVAILABILITY BREAK/REST Driver 1 When moving When stopped When stopped When stopped Driver 2 N/A When stopped When driving1 When stopped 1) I.e., vehicle is driven by Driver 1.

Smart Cards

There are four types of Smart cards:

Driver card - Store driver data for 28 days - Valid for max. five years - Must be available 21 months after the Annex 1B publication

Workshop card - Valid for max. one year - No EU requirements on availability date - PIN code protected - Only for approved workshops

Company card - Validity date not defined - No EU requirements on availability date

Control card - Validity date not defined - No EU requirements on availability date

Volvo manufacturing facilities and workshops will need workshop cards to activate and calibrate the recording equipment. The Member State authorities issue them to manufactures and workshops approved by the same Member

If the country code has to be changed/entered this will be performed at the same time as for calibration. 2 Volvo 3P has the opinion that VRN and CC should not be linked to first calibration and that vehicle manufacturer should carry out this first calibration.

Content Conditions for the campaign

A detailed specification list at each dealer of customers with long bodybuilder lead-time in order for SVDO to supply the right digital tachograph material in time, i.e. the dealer must ask the customer of estimated register date.

If a bodybuilder is our customer he will be advised to come back with the vehicle to the dealer for a campaign update before delivery to his customer.

Dealer will advice the customer to pre-register his vehicle if possible.

A map of nearest Agreed Workshops (AWS) will be attached, i.e. where should the dealer send the vehicle for retrofitting and calibration. Coming during spring 2005.

The list will be discussed during the spring 2005 together with SVDO, first meeting 5th of January 2005 (Reinhard Dittmers), in order to prioritise the right AWS to be ready near located to VT dealers.

Chassis number/VIN for RIGID vehicles built between w511 and w522 are allowed to use the campaign, if and only if not being able to register before 5th of August 2005.

A condition to get a retrofit kit is that the specific Member State (MS) is ready with its card issuing process, if not there is no way for us to fit a legal digital tachograph – NO RETROFIT!

Actions at the dealer for the campaign

Send vehicle to bodybuilder – Inform that the vehicle will be returned to the dealer. – Write down the chassis number/VIN and estimated return date. – Prepare the Agreed Workshop (AWS) for when the vehicle will be retrofitted and inform corresponding chassis no. – Inform customer when he/she shall have the registration data available prior to the installation/calibration

Send vehicle to appointed AWS – Only if the MS is ready with its card issuing process. – Green plate to be used while transporting vehicles.

When the vehicle comes back from the AWS, update VECU, cluster and VDA (with part no and serial no of digital tachograph + sensor) – If a Dynafleet system is ordered, update vehicle with SIB-kit.

Deliver vehicle to the customer.

Note! Continuous update will be upgraded with additional Product News.

Note! Each workshop (WS) needs to be approved by the authorities to be allowed to install, activate and calibrate the new digital tachograph. Routines need to be brought to secure handling of cards, storage of data, education, storage of cards etc. This work needs to be started ASAP to be ready prior to the 5th of August 2005.

It is each WS responsibility to educate themselves and to apply for workshop cards in its member state (MS).

Each driver needs to apply for his/her driver card and there is a cost for this settled by the MS. The lifetime is 5 year. Delivery to customer Each fleet owner needs to apply for a company card to be able to lock in his/her data. This is mandatory and needed when performing scheduled downloads and also if a vehicle tachograph breaks the only way for the WS to return the data to the fleet is if a company card have been used.

Since each MS produce there own smart cards the performance of the tachograph may vary from one MS to another. This is not in the hands of Volvo since Volvo do not produce any smart cards. The reason is that there is a couple of raw card issuer that is possible for the MS to use and the communication performance varies which means the delay time of the
