Narcotics Operation Results in 49 Arrests, $5.6K in Street Value Drugs and $5.2K in Drug Proceeds Seized

Newark Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose reports that the ongoing, citywide narcotics sweep has resulted in 49 arrests, confiscation of 392 decks of heroin, 129 vials of cocaine, 23 plastic bags of marijuana and 16 pills last week.

Created in response to citizen complaints regarding drug sales in their communities, the ongoing operation is aimed at removing guns and drugs from our streets while enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Between Monday, August 28th and Sunday, September 3rd, police confiscated $5,239.14 in proceeds from drug sales. The narcotics confiscated have a street value of approximately $5,600.00.

On Sunday, September 3rd, police arrested Tony Carr, 55, and Ahmed A. Jones, 20, after the duo were seen selling narcotics in the area of South Orange and Fairmount avenues. Carr was charged with possession of heroin while Jones was charged with possession of heroin, possession with intent to distribute and possession with the intent to distribute within 1,000 feet of a school.

That same day, officers making a routine motor vehicle stop, arrested 30-year-old Teddy G. Rodriguez for multiple narcotics offenses. The officers stopped the vehicle for a minor infraction. As they approached, they observed the suspect in possession of marijuana. Rodriguez was asked to exit the vehicle. He complied but attacked one of the officers. Subdued ultimately, he was charged with possession of heroin and prescription drugs, possession of drugs with the intent to distribute and possession of the drugs within 1,000 feet of a school. Because he fought with the arresting officers, he was additionally charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest.

On Saturday, September 2nd, another motor vehicle stop led to the arrest of 24-year-old Marcus E. Kelly. Observed talking on his cell phone while driving, officers conducted a motor vehicle stop at West Kinney Street and Irvine Turner Boulevard.

Officers observed the driver attempting to conceal a bag which contained narcotics. Officers confiscated 111 glassine envelopes of heroin from Kelly. He was arrested and charged with possession of heroin and cocaine, possession of both drugs with the intent to distribute and possession of both drugs within 500 feet of a public housing complex.

On Friday, September 1st, while in the area of Irvine Turner Boulevard and Avon Avenue, officers came upon 55-year-old Robert Bryant who was drinking alcohol in public. Officers approached Bryant and asked for his identification. As he pulled out his wallet, Bryant dropped heroin from his pocket. Bryant was arrested and charged accordingly. Tiffany Gaskins, 35, Rasheem Davis, 28, Danny Paz, 23, Sean Barrett, 49, Larry L. Baskerville, 64, Idris Perry, 34, Gabriel Horace, 22, Anthony H. Smith, 22, Akil Muhammad, 48, Tony Robinson, 43, Quennel R. Jordan, 33, Salih A. Fox, 22, Nnamdi Parker, 43, Daquan T. Paige, 28, Quinn Fulston, 36, Juanita Goodman, 57, Anthony Allen, 61, Kevin Halton, 27, Bobby Victor, 28, Charles Rutherford, 78, Shawn W. Baldwin, 28, Gregory Ward, 51, and Kayron Caldwell, 25, all Newark residents, were arrested for outstanding warrants.

The following out-of-towers, all from New Jersey, were arrested for outstanding warrants, Nana Abayie, 55 of Bayonne, Edward Williams, 36, Temara J. Collins, 20 and LaTosha N. Currie, 36, all of Elizabeth, Adam Dawson, 37 of Jackson, Shaquan Williams, 24 and Ibn Harkeem, 58 are both from East Orange, Aljamar A. Dickerson, 25 is from Hillside and Gyasi Muhammad, 21 is from Irvington.

Mark Williams, 44, Nicholas Deberto, 54, Amir H. Waldron, 23, Jerome Wicker, 53, Coyette Elliot, 49, Jamar Horne, 38, all of Newark, as well as two juveniles were arrested for narcotics-related offenses as part of this operation.

These charges are merely accusations. Each suspect is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
