Perform Eye Irrigation

Objective: The student, using the supplies and equipment listed below, will demonstrate how to irrigate the patient’s eye.

Supplies: irrigating solution, sterile basin, irrigating syringe, protective gear

(gown, face shield, disposable gloves), towels, kidney-shaped basin, tissues, patient chart

Read and familiarize yourself with the procedure; complete the minimum practice requirements. Document each MPR using proper charting technique. Complete each procedure within a reasonable amount of time, with a minimum of 85% accuracy.

3.  Record the patient’s history and main complaint. 4.  Review the physician’s order for the patient’s name, the volume and name of the irrigating solution, and which eye to irrigate.

5.  Ask the patient about medication allergies. Explain the entire procedure.

6.  Check the label of the irrigating solution against the physician’s order before pouring it into the sterile basin for irrigation. 7.  Wash your hands. 8.  Put on the gown, face shield, and gloves before proceeding with irrigation. 9.  Ask the patient to lie or sit down with the head tilted toward the eye to be irrigated. Place a towel and the kidney-shaped basin next to the patient’s face to catch irrigating fluid.

10.  With your dominant hand, fill the irrigating syringe with the prescribed irrigating solution.

11.  With your nondominant hand, press with a tissue against the patient’s cheekbone beneath the eye to expose more of the eye surface. 12. While holding the syringe approximately 1/2 inch from the eye, gently direct the fluid toward the inside surface of the lower conjunctiva and from the inner to outer corner of the eye. 14.  Continue irrigating until the prescribed volume is used. Depending on the cause and symptoms, the physician may order further irrigation 15.  When irrigation is complete, dry the area around the affected eye with tissues.

16.  Remove your protective clothing and place it in the proper laundry and waste containers. 17.  Wash your hands. Prior to leaving the examination room, ask the patient if he or she has any questions. 18.  Document the patient’s tolerance of the procedure, the amount and kind of irrigating solution, and the eye irrigated. Sign the entry with your name and credentials.
