    The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary (September 08, 2020) The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary refers to the feast day celebrated on September 08 in honour of Mary, Mother of Jesus. Usually the Church celebrates the feast day of the saints on the date of their death, as this is truly their ‘dies natalis’, the birth into everlasting life. However, there are three people whose birthdays have traditionally been celebrated by Christians, namely Jesus Christ, St. John the Baptist and the Blessed Virgin Mary. According to the Church fathers, the primary reason for the celebration of these birthdays is that all three were born without original sin. Yet another reason for this is found in the singular mission St. John the Baptist and Mama Mary had in the History of Salvation (Cf. Valentini, Dictionary of Mary, 1985). St. Augustine, for instance, relates Mary’s birth with Jesus’ saving work: “She is the flower of the field from whom bloomed the precious lily of the valley. Through her birth the nature, inherited from our first parents, is changed.” Saint Thomas Christians celebrate the feast of the Nativity of Mary with Ettu Nombu (eight-day lent) in remembrance of the birth of Mother Mary, during which believers participate in fasting and prayer. The Basilica of Our Lady of Good Health, (known as Sanctuary of Our Lady of Vailankanni), Tamil Nadu, and Our Lady of Good Health Shrine (or St. Mary’s Basilica), Shivajinagar, Bangalore, are well-known Marian shrines in honour of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.     Homily: Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Parish Feast day Psalm 139: 14 reads, “I give you thanks, for I am wonderfully made; wonderful are your works”. Life is the most precious gift and we do well to keep a day each year to thank God, our creator, in a special way for this great gift. Today we celebrate with joy the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary to thank God for the gift of Mary to the world. The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is one of the three nativities the Church celebrates during the year of worship. The other two are the Nativity of Jesus Christ and the Nativity of St John the Baptist. The Nativities of Jesus Christ, Blessed Virgin Mary and St John the Baptist are celebrated because of the singular mission each had in salvation history. The salvation history is the story of God’s relation to man. It is the dramatic story of God’s calling and reaching out to restore the rebellious/disobedient family of Adam to the Trinitarian Family. The climax of the story comes when the Father sends his Son into the midst of history for the salvation of the world. (Cf “The Family of God” edited by Scott Hahn &Leon Suprenant, Jr.) According to St. Paul, “When the time had fully come God sent forth his son, born of a woman.     Volume 25, Issue 3 — September 8, 2020 September 8, 2020 — The Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary To the Members of the United States Association of Consecrated Virgins, Well, these past months have been something! So many of my meetings and travel obligations have been cancelled or held on-line. As in all things, we need to see what good God is drawing from all this and how we can cooperate. Two lessons seem clear to me: technology and making connections. Certainly, this has been a time of increased isolation. We have all been using technology far more than before. We have participated in Zoom meetings. Folks have been communicating with loved ones in hospitals through their phones and computers. It is fascinating, however, that even these modern aids to our communications can themselves become tiring or even further isolating. We really want to be with one another face to face. Still, we should grab these experiences and use them for the glory of God, even if always in a balanced way. The angel, Gabriel, went to meet Mary and the message got through. Face to face is always better but sometimes it is really important that the Word of God be expressed. Let us continue to use these modern means well in service of Jesus. Secondly, making connections. We have become more aware of the great value of our lives in being connected. Too often we can be consumed by what we do or have to do.     THE PRESENTATION OF MARY IN THE TEMPLE The Earthly Sanctuary Mary’s Humility The Presentation of Mary in the Temple – November 21st November 21, 2019 GOSPEL: Luke 10:38-42, 11:27-28 EPISTLE: Hebrews 9:1-11 INTRODUCTION The primary importance of the Virgin Mary to the Church is the Incarnation. Because of this, the Virgin Mary is usually portrayed in iconography as holding her young Son. The message proclaimed by the icon is that God has come in the flesh, and here is proof: His mother holding her Son. This study seeks to introduce aspects of the life of the Virgin Mary that are not very commonly known from an historical viewpoint. The significance of some of the events in the life of the Virgin Mary including her place among the saints in glory is covered quite well in The Life of the Virgin Mary by the Holy Apostles Convent, which is recommended for further reading. One can divide up the life of the Virgin Mary into four parts, each of which produced major changes in her life. FEAST OF THE NATIVITY OF OUR LADY There are many Marian feast days celebrated in the Catholic Church, but the principal ones are the Solemnity of Mary the Mother of God, the Presentation of Our Lord in the Temple, the Annunciation, the Assumption, the Immaculate Conception and the Nativity of our Lady. The Feasts of our Lady are dear to us. Before we are born, our mothers are our entire world; they enfold, nourish, and protect us. When we are born they continue to care for us, by comforting, nursing, and teaching us as we grow. Mothers do not stop being mothers just because we are grown. Our mother will always be our mother. So it is with our Blessed Mother, the Virgin Mary. She will always be Jesus’ Mother, and she will always be our Mother with Jesus our brother. As our Mother, she will continue to nourish, protect, comfort, and teach us as we grow. She is the Mother of God, the Queen of the Saints, the humble spouse of the Church, and attentive patron of hundreds. It is not surprising that there are So many feast days dedicated to Mother Mary. The feast of the Nativity of Mary celebrated on the 8th of September is closely connected with the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Mary who is prepared by divine providence to be the Mother of Jesus the son of God, is conceived in the womb of her mother Anna, her father being Joachim, without the stain of sin and her birth is 19 considered by the Church as a Solemn event.
