Course Description: Family and Consumer Sciences I is an introductory course and includes classroom instruction and laboratory experience. It is designed to include all sixteen areas of Family and Consumer Sciences. Emphasis is placed on the following major areas of human development, career services, relationships, food and nutrition, textiles and apparel, early childhood education, family, housing and interior, parenting and more. Project based instruction and integration of FCCLA provides students with opportunities to utilize higher order thinking, communication, leadership, and management processes, leadership development, personal growth, and school/community involvement.

Objectives to be covered:  Analyze career paths within consumer and family resources.  Demonstrate management of individual and family resources, including food, clothing, shelter, health care, recreation and transportation.  Apply management and planning skills and processes to organize tasks and responsibilities.  Examine the need for personal and family financial planning.  Demonstrate sanitation procedures for a clean and safe environment.  Examine family as the basic unit of society  Demonstrate design ideas through visual presentation.  Determine the impact of social, economic, and technological forces on individual growth and development.  Demonstrate ability to select, store, prepare, and serve nutritious and aesthetically pleasing food.  Demonstrate skills needed to produce, alter, or repair textiles products and apparel.

Textbooks Students will be using a variety of textbooks for this class. All books will be kept in the classroom at all times. Any student damaging or degrading a book will be required to pay for that book.

Grading System Grades are figured on the basis of the % of total possible points of graded activities a student has each nine weeks. The students’ grades will break down as follows: -Class participation=10% -Class work=20% -Projects=40% -Tests-15% -Homework-10% -Work Ethics (Behavior/attendance)=5%

Tests Tests will be given at the end of each unit. All tests will not be traditional tests. Some of the larger projects will count as test grades.

Homework Homework will be assigned as needed and required. Of course there will not be homework every night; however certain tasks that students will be asked to complete at home will count as homework.

Make-Up Work If students and when students are absent from class, students will be given 3 days to make up the missed work. If the work is not made up within 3 days, students will receive a 0. Students who are absent during labs will not be allowed to make up labs; however, an alternative assignment will be given to insure that the student receives a grade.

Group Work Frequently, students will be asked to work in groups. Each student is required to participate in group assignments in order to receive credit for that assignment. All projects are to be ready at the designated time and presented in a professional manner.

Hall Passes Students will not be allowed to leave the classroom for any reason unless they have a doctor’s note stating otherwise. So Don’t Ask! Students are given ample time between classes to use the restrooms and get everything done.

Labs (Cooking/Sewing) Students will have to pass the corresponding tests with a 90 or above in order to participate in cooking labs and sewing labs. No one is allowed in any of the lab areas without my permission.

Some Projects to be completed this semester . 3 or more community service projects (students’ choice) . Classroom committees . Get in Shape Plans . Water Babies . Illustrated Talk Presentations . Foods Labs . Contests . All About Me Presentations (PowerPoint/Posters) . Design-a-room presentation boards . Table Etiquette . Products history time line . Family Album . Redesigned clothes/recycled clothes fashion show

Clubs Students will also be able to participate in Family, Career, and Community Leaders of American (FCCLA). This club is for Family and Consumer Sciences students only. Being a part of this club entitles students to different competitions, leadership development, field trips, and more. There are fees created by the State to go along with this club.

Rewards I love to reward students and majority of the awards given will be a surprise so be on your best behavior at all times and be professional at all times; even when you are not in my class.

Classroom Rules 1. Be in seat prepared when bell rings. a. Students not inside classroom when bell rings will be locked out until I am ready for that student to enter. b. This also includes with all needed materials such as pen, pencil, paper, projects, etc. 2. RESPECT EVERYONE!!!! 3. NO GUM, FOOD OR DRINKS ALLOWED IN CLASS UNLESS PROVIDED BY ME. 4. NO PLAYING IN CLASS!!! a. This includes horseplay, running, throwing of anything, etc. b. Also includes keeping hands and all other body parts to one self. 5. SIT IN CHAIRS ONLY! a. No sitting on tables, backs of chairs, counters, desks, floor or anywhere else. 6. NO GROOMING! 7. PROFANITY EQUALS AUTOMATIC REMOVAL FROM THE CLASS!!!
