FAIRWINDS YARD WASTE PICK-UP

Your Fairwinds Community Association has arranged for a curb-side yard waste pick-up service. The Regional District of Nanaimo’s household garbage pick-up does not include yard waste and therefore homeowners can only legally dispose of their yard waste by taking it to a disposal site and paying a disposal fee. For smaller quantities this can be expensive. This service is therefore a low cost alternative and has the added benefit of eliminating yard waste that ends up on vacant lots or golf course property. Let’s keep Fairwinds as beautiful as it can be.

Pick-up is currently as follows:

Winter: December to March is the 1st Monday of each month Otherwise: April to November, weekly on Mondays (including statutory holidays)

The details of this program are as follows:

 Residents will be responsible for purchasing labels to affix to their yard waste bags, at a cost of $3.00 each, plus applicable taxes. Thanks to Fairwinds for supporting the program by selling the bag tags at the Fairwinds Centre (3455 Fairwinds Drive) at their main desk. They will accept various forms of payment.  Yard waste must be in clear plastic (33 gallon/127 liter/large) garbage bags such that the contents can be easily identified, and these are available at various local retailers.  Only natural yard waste such as grass cuttings, leaves, branches, plant material, etc. will be picked-up.  No stones, household garbage, man-made items, metals, pet or animal feces, tree trunks, stumps, or large tree limbs will be allowed.  Bags must have a label affixed and each has a maximum weight limited to 45 pounds.  Bags that are not in compliance with these conditions will not be picked-up.  Homeowners are to have their bag(s) at the curb in front of their homes by 7:00 AM on the day of pick-up and if the day corresponds to an RDN garbage day, to place their bags in a separate location from their household garbage.  The bags will be disposed of at a legal disposal station or dump where yard waste composting takes place.  This service is being run by Shaun Groenier of Shaun’s Lawn. He currently provides general landscaping services to the residents of Fairwinds, and is well known in the area. He can be reached on his cell phone number at (250) 729-6515.
