Position's primary function and its relationship to the Institute as a whole: The Enterostomal Therapy Nurse is a registered professional nurse, board certified in Enterostomal Therapy. In accordance with the philosophy and objectives of the Department of Nursing and the standards of the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN), the Enterostomal Therapy Nurse participates in the assessment, planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of enterostomal and skin/wound care service in inpatient and ambulatory care areas that serve adult and pediatric patient populations.

Position reports to: Clinical Nurse Specialist - CWOCN

Duties and Responsibilities: Clinical: 1. Adheres to all regulatory requirements and professional standards such as ANA, ONS, AORN, AACN, and ASPAN as applicable to the specific area of nursing practice. 2. Assesses stoma(s), fistula(ae), draining wound(s), incontinence and skin integrity of patients. 3. In collaboration with staff nurses, provides appropriate Enterostomal Therapy nursing care to designated patients ensuring the physical, psychological and social rehabilitation of the patient. 4. Provides age/developmental status appropriate patient education in management of ostomy(ies). 5. Provides counseling, teaching and community referrals to patients and families to ensure that psychological, physical, social and rehabilitative needs are met. 6. Monitors the effectiveness of care delivered to patients with an ostomy, fistula, draining wound, skin related problems, pressure ulcers or incontinence, and revises plan of care as necessary. 7. Acts as a resource person to medical and nursing staff with regard to ostomy(ies), fistula(ae), draining wound(s), incontinence skin management and pressure ulcers. 8. Demonstrates the ability to communicate with nursing and medical staff on matters related to the patient’s care and progress. 9. Participates in clinical evaluation and testing of products related to E.T. practice. Coordinates clinical testing and new products related to Enterostomal Therapy to ensure ongoing quality of care and cost containment. 10.Participates in the development of philosophy, standards, policies, procedures and performance improvement activities related to Enterostomal Therapy services and oncology nursing. 11.Actively participates in team dynamics activities. Participates in service enhancement initiatives, which result in improvements in patient care. 12.Complies with HIPAA rules and regulations. Is able to define own level of access for minimum necessary requirements. 13.Demonstrates knowledge and skills that ensure patient safety. Education: 1. Assesses and identifies learning needs of Roswell Park Cancer Institute nursing staff with regard to care of patients with ostomies, draining wounds, incontinence problems and pressure ulcers. 2. Participates in planning and presenting workshops and inservices to Roswell Park Cancer Institute nursing staff and allied community health professionals. 3. Prepares and implements clear, concise and accurate lesson plans. 4. Maintains current professional expertise by attending continuing education programs, workshops, reading current publications and participating in professional organizations. 5. Participates in Department of Nursing and Institute committees as assigned. 6. Participates in the development of philosophy, standards, policies and procedures for enterostomal and wound/skin care. 7. Identifies personal strengths and areas in need of improvement, initiates goals for self development and demonstrates self motivation to achieve set goals and objectives. 8. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety and compliance standards. 9. Prepares other written documentati0n as required by care assignment and the department; maintains, distributes, analyzes and projects information for required records, reports and statistics as directed. 10.Attends meetings as required. 11. Completes continuing education programs that provide at least 10 CEU credits per calendar year.

Minimum Qualifications: License and Certification Requirements: 1. License to practice as a registered nurse in New York State; and 2. Board Certification in Enterostomal Therapy from the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Society (WOCN).

Education and Experience: 1. Bachelor’s degree in Nursing with graduation from and accredited Enterostomal Therapy Nurse Education program and the equivalent of one (1) year of Fulltime experience in Oncology or Enterostomal Therapy Nursing; or 2. Bachelor’s degree in Education with an Associate’s degree in Nursing and graduation from an accredited Enterostomal Therapy Nurse Education Program and the equivalent of one (1) year of fulltime experience in oncology or enterostomal therapy nursing.

Preferred Qualifications: 1. Masters degree in Nursing 2. Previous experience as a CETN in a comprehensive/clinical cancer center 3. Demonstrated public speaking and professional writing skills
