It is good to be able to share these stories with others through the newsletter and the DSEN website so please let me know if there is some good news that your group has to share. Co-wheels Dundee
Co-wheels is the UK’s largest Social Enterprise Car Club operator, currently managing 40 car club locations with over 200 cars on the ground. Our goal is to reduce the number of cars on our roads and reduce climate change through promoting an alternative to car ownership. Each car has been shown to help remove 30 other cars from the road (Carplus 2012).
Here in Dundee we have a small car club which we are working to expand. The 3 cars are located in Bell Street Car Park (2 ford Fiestas) and at the Science Centre (a Ford Fusion). A fourth one (Vauxhall Zafira) is available at Dundee University mid-week only between 10am & 4 pm. (Outside these times it’s used as a rideshare vehicle between Dundee and Anstruther).
Car club membership is open to anyone 18+ who has held a full licence for more than 12 months and has no more than 6 points on their licence. Cars are available from £4.50 per hour +21p per mile. This includes everything including fuel, insurance, tax, maintenance, and cleaning and breakdown recovery. For organisations, using Car Club vehicles for staff travel, it eliminates corporate liability associated with paying staff to use their own cars as well as administration relating to mileage claims. Each member is issued with a smart card which they use to gain access to the car once a booking has been made. Bookings can be done on line or by phone 24 hours a day. DSEN members can access Free Membership (normally £25) and get a free £20 start-up credit on their account. The website holds information on the ‘Developing Markets’ contract which the RfB led consortium is currently delivering. Social enterprises can sign up to the ‘register’ which is a national list of social enterprises. It has been designed to provide a searchable single point of enquiry for public sector commissioners, private sector businesses and third sector organisations seeking social enterprise partners.
